The No.9 seed Connecticut Huskies will look to continue their tear through this year’s Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament when they set their sights on the No.4 seed Syracuse Orange this Friday night in the semi-finals. Tip-off from Madison Square Garden is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Connecticut’s four losses in its last five regular season games dropped it into unfamiliar territory as the Huskies had to make a rare appearance in the first round of this tournament as the ninth seed. They quickly found their game with a 97-71 romp over DePaul as a 15-point favorite in Tuesday’s first round and posted a solid 79-62 win over No.8 seed Georgetown as a three-point favorite in Wednesday’s second round.

They saved their best performance so far this week for Thursday’s quarterfinals with a stunning last-second 76-74 win over No.1 seed Pittsburgh as a 5 ½-point underdog. Kemba Walker was once again the difference as he scored a team-high 24 points including the game-winning jumper as time expired. Walker is averaging 26 points a game through the first three rounds of this tournament.

Syracuse enjoyed a much deserved double-bye for the first two rounds as the fourth seed in the conference. Fortunately the layoff had little effect on their game as the Orange took-out No.5 seed St. John’s 79-73 as a three-point favorite. The game was much closer than the final score as the Red Storm pushed Syracuse to its limits before faltering down the stretch.

A couple of unfamiliar names got it done for the Orange in this game as Brandon Triche scored a season-high 22 points and freshman Fab Melo added 12 points off the bench including two huge layups in the final two minutes that helped to seal the win. Rick Jackson had a team-high nine rebounds and Kris Joseph was the second leading scorer with 14 points.

Syracuse beat the Huskies 66-58 as a three-point road underdog during the regular season but will be hard-pressed to repeat that performance against a team that appears to be on a mission. With Pitt out of the way, the path to a Big East Tournament Championship is suddenly wide-open for Kemba Walker and the streaking Huskies.

Over is 22-7 in UCONN last 29 neutral site games.
UCONN are 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 Fri. games.
Over is 15-6 in SYR last 21 neutral site games.

The Pick: Connecticut 73-69
