The final game of round one of the 2011 Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden pits the No.14 seed Providence Friars against the No.11 seed Marquette Golden Eagles. Tuesday night’s game tips at 9 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

Providence snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 75-74 win over Rutgers as a 3 ½-point home favorite in its final game of the regular season. The Friars finished with an overall record of 15-16 straight-up (11-16 against the spread) and were 4-14 SU in Big East play.

Senior guard Marshon Brooks has accounted for close to 33 percent of the Friars scoring this season with 24.8 points a game. He also leads the team in rebounds with 7.2 a game. Vincent Council is the second leading scorer with 13.5 points and is averaging a team-high 5.9 assists a game. Providence is averaging 76 points and 39 rebounds a game.

Marquette finished the regular season on a down note with a 67-60 loss to Cincinnati last Wednesday as a five-point home favorite and an 85-72 loss to Seton Hall as a one-point road underdog this past Saturday. The Golden Eagles are 18-13 SU overall (14-11 ATS) and 9-9 SU in the conference.

Jimmy Butler leads a trio of players scoring in double-figures with an average of 16.2 points a game. Daruis Johnson-Odom is second with 15.9 points and Jae Crowder is averaging 12.1 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds a game. Marquette matches up well with the Friars with 77 points and 36 rebounds a game.

Head-to-head, the Golden Eagles have won seven of the last eight games SU including an 86-62 victory earlier this season as a 10 ½-point home favorite. They are 5-0 ATS in the last five games and the total has gone ‘over’ in four of them.

Marquette still has serious aspirations of getting a bid to the NCAA Tournament but will need a deep run this week to have a chance. The Golden Eagles get the win and advance, but it will not be easy as the Friars cover the eight-point spread.

Under is 9-2 in MARQ last 11 vs. Big East.
