So many leagues try and set up these dramatic final regular season games and it falls flat. That is not the case for the Mountain West this season as these teams are tied for first place in the league with identical 15-2 records. [ad-4468020]

New Mexico

The Lobos may not have quite the non-conference resume that San Diego State does but they beat the Aztecs when they hosted them last month – by 14 points at home.

New Mexico may be the most underrated team in America. Coming into the season everyone knew about Kendall Williams but nobody was predicting the explosion of Cameron Bairstow. He is one of only 4 players in America averaging better than 20 points and 7 rebounds per game.

He and center Alex Kirk give the Lobos some serious heft and production inside. Williams was the star last year and he can still be that kind of player when need be.

This is a very good New Mexico team, probably the best they have had over the last few years when they have been one of the best teams in the MWC.

They are good on the road too with an 8-1 record, 6-2 ATS. This team is not to be underestimated but you would think that San Diego State already knows that.

San Diego State

There is not a lot of buzz about San Diego State right now but this team is still ranked 10th in the nation and has only three losses on the season. One of those was to New Mexico so getting this season ending win would at least allow them to say that there is no team in the conference that is better than they are.

The only team to beat them on their own floor this season was Arizona and that was when they were completely healthy.

Even though Bairstow is having a sensational season most see Aztec guard Xavier Thames as the likely Mountain West Player of the Year. Thames was a non-factor in their loss to New Mexico as he had his worst game of the season. That seems unlikely to happen a second time, especially at home.

As good as SDSU is the Lobos are a tough matchup for them with their inside beef. They are a good rebounding team but it is with more athletics types.

The Aztecs are third in the nation in points allowed and at home so they should give the Lobos a much better game than they did in that loss.

Still I just don’t like the way these teams matchup. The Aztecs are going to have to get the tempo going and make some shots.

If they can speed things up the NM size advantage can be overcome.

Spread Pick: New Mexico +4
