March Madness First-Round Betting – Commodors Will Slow Racers
The Murray State Racers are a trendy first-round upset pick but they’ll have to go through a tough SEC opponent, that many bettors are underrating.
The Racers are a popular upset pick mostly because of the fact that they have a veteran, balanced lineup and can score with the best of them. The Ohio Valley champs topped the 80-point mark seven times this season, which gives them plenty of confidence heading into their matchup.
But Vandy is a deep squad with plenty of talent. This should be a close game but the Commodores are the better team.
Who Are The Racers?
The Racers are a mid-major, which means not many people will know a whole lot about them. There’s plenty of hearsay to go around and it has spread like wildfires.
The Racers have plenty of quickness and outside shooting, but where they lack is on the interior. They typically rely on the backcourt but they will need inside scoring in this game to get by.
Guards Isacc Miles and B.J. Jenkins will have to slow down Jermaine Beal if this team wants to have a shot.
The key for them is their balance. Throughout most of the year, they had six scorers in double-figures with none averaging more than 11 per game.
Who Are The Commodores?
Vandy is no pushover. They finished in second place in the SEC regular season and while they have been a bit inconsistent at times, they have the constituents to make a deep run in the tournament.
They are a team that runs 10-deep, so depth is not the problem. The problem has been consistency on the inside with center A.J. Ogilvy. He has just 12 points and 11 rebounds in his last two games, but when he’s on and providing an inside presence, the Commodores have been tough to stop.
They have four players that average in double figures with guard Jermaine Beal leading the way with 14.7 points per game. Overall, this is a fairly good shooting team.
Outlook & Pick
This is going to be a high-scoring game, so the over is a good bet. But for the sides, it’s hard to go against Vanderbilt. Murray State is going to score and a lot of people might be surprised at how long they hang around.
But Beal is going to be a problem for them just as good combo guards have been all season. And while Ogilvy is a bit soft against tough competition, he should be just fine against a mid-major.
Vandy has the depth and the inside-out game to get this done and advance.
