Teddy June’s College Basketball Key Mid-Season Additions

The Fall Semester is in the books at most campuses around the United States and that means several key players will be suiting up and in action for their respective teams. These players will affect some of the biggest programs in the nation and additionally affect the betting marketplace. Some have been out due to injury while others due to suspension and others due to eligibility.

Here are the top 5 biggest midseason additions.

1.) Alex Legion (Illinois Fighting Illini): No question about it Legion is number 1 on this list as the 6-5 freak of an athlete will be making his debut as early as the 20th of December. After the 2007 High School season Legion was the 27th ranked player in the nation in the ESPN 150 and was Billy Gillispie’s first top recruit to sign at Kentucky. Differences with the coaching staff early on led Legion to find Bruce Weber where he quickly transferred out to Illinois. He will be a huge addition to an Illini squad desperately need of the services he can provide. He will be the most talented player on this team and should put up numbers right from the start. Legion is a major addition right before conference play for the Illini.

2.) Stanley Robinson (UConn Huskies): So you mean to tell me the 2nd ranked team in the country gets back a highly touted recruit who supposedly has found himself and grown up in the past 8 months?!?! Connecticut certainly has been one of the few teams people have talked about as a team that can compete against UNC but this addition will be huge for them. Robinson sat out the first semester due to personal issues and has been working an in steel mill in Willimantic, CT. All the reports out of Connecticut are this freak of an athlete has grown up in his time away from school and is working harder than ever. That certainly can’t be good news for the rest of the Big East as Robinson averaged over 15ppg and 6rpg down the stretch of last season and has all the potential in the world to be an NBA star. Robinson gives them much needed length on the wing and a guy that can simply do it all. He has improved his outside shot the last few years, can bang down low, get to the basket in a hurry and can jump out of the gym. It may take a few weeks or even months for him to get back into the swing of things but this is a huge addition to an already loaded squad.

3.) Tyree Evans (Kent State Golden Flashes): It’s been a long and bumpy road for this talented but troubled kid the last few years. Originally headed to Cincinnati he was charged with criminal charges and was canned, then headed to two different JUCO’s for a year, then signed an LOI to Maryland and backed out of that after being cleared to play despite criminal record issues, and now finally the road ends at Kent State. I may be missing a few stages there but you get the point. The question now for Evans is can he finally get his young life together outside the gym in order for him to stay on the court. A few years back coming out of high school he was an ESPN top 150 recruit and can make an immediate impact for this solid mid major program. He should add needed help on the offensive end for Fisher and Singletary the real question will be is off court issues. If he can stay away from trouble he will be a nice addition to an already talented Golden Flash team.

4.) Laval Lucas-Perry (Michigan Wolverines): A talented 6 foot 2 ESPN top 150 recruit returns home to Michigan after transferring out of Arizona after just one semester. Lucas-Perry should be a nice addition to what has been a very good Michigan team early this season .The Wolverines already have upsets over UCLA and Duke and certainly seem to finally have their program headed in the right direction under John Beilien. As a senior in HS Lucas-Perry averaged 26 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game and was the 20th ranked point guard in the nation according to Rivals.com. Michigan has been clicking early this season and Lucas-Perry is still very young so we may see him slowly get incorporated in this team as the next several weeks unfold.

5.) Marcus Ginyard (North Carolina Tar Heels): A stress fracture in his right foot in the off season knocked out the top Tar Heels’ defender for the first semester. Not that the number 1 team in the nation who has absolutely looked dominated early this year needed any more help but all reports out of UNC are that Ginyard is on his way back to the lineup. He should add a nice defensive presence off the bench and another talented body for Roy Williams to use as the Tar Heels will be ready to roll for conference play.

Others to Note: Mike Mercer and Gus Gilchrist (South Florida Bulls) Juan Fernandez (Temple Owls) Lewis Clinch (Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets) Marcus Johnson (USC Trojans)=”
