College Hoops – Mid Season Odds Round Up

I think we are at about the midway point of the college hoops season. As this is being written there are still a few undefeated teams, some surprises and some disappointments.

The focus of this team is going to be on those three remaining unbeatens plus a few other teams that I think could be upset any of them in a one and done scenario – at a few different odds levels.

To be clear I am not saying put your money on these guys I am just saying that they could knock off a team like Kentucky and if you can do that than who knows.

Kentucky +115

The Wildcats have had way too many close calls this season but in each case their size and defensive intensity wears you down. The question is whether they can win a game that has a real offensive flow where they would have to make big shots and not just count on offensive rebounding to get the job done.

[dfads params=’groups=63742&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

They have become the masters of winning ugly but this team is still very talented. I wouldn’t bet against them winning it all but on a game by game basis they have proven to be a good fade with their disappointing ATS record.

Duke +700

Kentucky gets the headlines but I think you can safely argue that Duke has the best frosh class this year. Jahlil Okafor has been fantastic and Justise Winslow and Tyus Jones are second and third in scoring for the Blue Devils.

Against the Wildcats the Blue Devils would more than be able to hold their own but they just don’t have the size of UK and that has proven to be a difference. The remaining season schedule is tougher than Kentucky’s but I still give Duke a shot at finishing undefeated. At this value they are definitely a bet to take.

Virginia +2000

I know this will sound insulting but as good as Virginia has shown I just don’t see them as a real contender. This is a great matchup team and against some other really good teams they can make them look silly because their defense is so good and they play so hard.

[dfads params=’groups=63727&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

However, they lack that “it” player who can make buckets when the whole world is watching and if they play against a team that can match their intensity with some depth I think this group will fall.

Gonzaga +1000

Gonzaga makes this list because they are very good, have experience and the size you need to be able to stand up to Kentucky. I am not sure it would provide any strategic advantage but there is a good story around former Wildcat Kyle Wiltjer taking on his former team should it come to that.

I love the way Gonzaga is solid on the perimeter with three seniors all of whom can score and Kevin Pangos can be a difference maker who can rise to the occasion. The key will be seeding for the Zags who probably won’t lose another game.

Texas +2500

The Longhorns make this list because they are a good team and I really liked their level of compete against Kentucky earlier in the season. Their own freshman, Myles Turner, is as good as any in Blue and had that game not been in Lexington we might have seen it be just that much closer.

Here is a bold statement. When the committee puts together the brackers I bet they keep that game in mind.

Florida State +50000

This is my total, out of nowhere, shot in the dark pick and again it is because the Seminoles are among a rare few teams that have the size to compete with Kentucky. They are a mess when it comes to scoring the basketball at times but they can improve over the course of the season.

Nothing is going to make Virginia any bigger but FSU could cause problems and get on a run. They have done surprising things in the past.
