New Mexico State appears to be a team built to make a run.

Indiana won’t make it easy on them though.

The Hoosiers knocked off both Kentucky and Ohio State while they were ranked number one this year. I expect a fast paced high scoring game between these two.

New Mexico State beat New Mexico on the road early this year, but other than that they don’t really have any big wins to hang their hat on. Despite that fact, New Mexico State appears to be a team capable of doing some real damage. Wendell McKines is a star in the post.

McKines averages 18.8 points and 10.8 boards per game. He is a great athlete, and he can step out and knock down the outside shot occasionally. McKines will be a tough matchup for anyone in this tournament.

Hernst Laroche gives the team a nice senior leader at the point guard spot. Laroche makes good decisions with the ball and he is great at pushing the tempo. Daniel Mullings has emerged as a star in the backcourt recently. Hamidu Rahman is a rock in the low post. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

New Mexico State gets to the free throw line more than any other team in the nation.

Cody Zeller is one of the best freshmen in the nation. Zeller stepped onto campus at Indiana and immediately turned this team into a contender in the Big Ten. He averages 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also shoots an amazing 62.4% from the floor.

Jordan Hulls is a terrific three-point shooter from the point guard spot. Hulls shoots 49% from long range. As a team the Hoosiers knock down 43.3% of their three-point attempts. Victor Oladipo is a guy who gets to the rim quite often. Verdell Jones III was a leader in the backcourt for this team, but he is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Expect Matt Roth and Will Sheehey to see more action than normal.

Indiana is eighth in the nation in field goal percentage at 48.7% as a team.

I expect New Mexico State to give Indiana all they can handle. Look for a game where the outcome is in doubt all the way to the end.

Prediction: Indiana 79 New Mexico State 77
