No. 9 Georgetown Hoyas vs. No. 17 Memphis Tigers Preview

Memphis (9-1) has struggled at home in their last 2 games narrowly beating a couple inferior teams in Austin Peay and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They will face a much tougher home test against a 9th ranked Georgetown (10-1) team that has rebounded from their first loss of the season with 2 straight blowouts. College basketball betting lines have Georgetown as 4.5-point favorites in this away game with a total of 146.5.

In their last games Georgetown crushed Loyola of Maryland 99-75 and Memphis did not look good in their 68-63 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

This season the Hoyas are 8-2 ATS and Memphis is only 2-6 ATS. The Tigers are only 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against teams from the Big East.

Memphis is still without their leading scorer, as Wesley Witherspoon is expected to miss at least another 3 weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Memphis will rely more on their defense in this game and while they only rank 145th in the nation in opponents’ points per game they rank 3rd in the nation in steals per game (11.2).

Both of these teams rank in the top 25 in the nation each averaging around 80 ppg. Memphis likes to play an up-tempo game and with Witherspoon out G Joe Jackson (11.5 ppg) and G Will Barton (11.4 ppg) will have to get out and run. They will have to penetrate in the lane and hit the open J, but neither of these guys is showing over 30% from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Tigers have to shoot better than they have in their last 2 games and in their last game they shot under 40% from the floor.

The Hoyas are led by the guard trio of Austin Freeman (18.5 ppg), Jason Clark (14.2 ppg), and Chris Wright (13.2 ppg). These guys can also get out and run, but while the Tigers are not good from downtown Georgetown is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the nation. Freeman and Clark are shooting over 45% from deep while Wright is at 39.1%. The Memphis guards have to get in these guys faces and not allow them to have open looks from beyond the arc.

Even though Memphis ranks higher than Georgetown in rebounds per game they will miss Witherspoon, who is their leading rebounder. Memphis has a pretty small lineup and they will have to man up as a team and hit the boards. They have to especially keep Hoyas 6’9” F Julian Vaughn (6.7 rpg) and 6”10” C Henry Sims (4 rpg) from dominating the glass.

The Memphis defense has their work cut out for them facing a Georgetown team that shot over 64% from the field and over 45% from 3-point land in their last game. The Tigers are a very athletic squad and they will have to get in the passing lanes of the Hoyas, who are great at ball movement ranking 7th in the nation in assists.

The Tigers can’t allow the Hoyas’ guards to penetrate and kick out for the 3-point bomb. If they can play good perimeter defense Memphis has a legit shot at a home upset.

Memphis is a very young team and that will show tonight facing the senior trio of Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, and Julian Vaughn. The Hoyas will shoot the rock well and because they are veterans they will not make stupid turnovers. Georgetown will come out and play great and keep Memphis from scoring a lot of points. The Hoyas will win this game and cover the spread handing the Tigers their 1st home loss of the season.

Betting Trends

Georgetown is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games facing teams with a winning home record. Memphis is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a winning record.

Pick: Georgetown -4.5
