Two teams needing to win at least twice in the Pac-10 Conference tournament just to gain ‘bubble team’ status meet in Los Angeles on Thursday when the California Golden Bears take on the Southern California Trojans.

Both squads finished 10-8 in the regular season in conference play, and they each won a game on the other team’s home court.

The first meeting of the season between these schools saw Cal post a 68-66 victory on January 22 at the Galen Center. Harper Kamp was one of four Golden Bears in double figures, finishing with a team-best 19 points in that game. Kamp finished tied with Jorge Gutierrez at 14.6 points per game for the season. Gutierrez only scored four in the first meeting with Southern Cal, but three other players (Markhuri Sanders-Frison, Brandon Smith, and Allen Crabbe) each scored 12 points apiece in that win.

The second matchup saw the Trojans gain their revenge by holding on for a 78-75 triumph on February 17 in Berkeley. Maurice Jones came off the bench and scored 22 points, all in the second half, to help the Trojans navigate to victory. USC’s season-leading scorer Nikola Vucevic, averaging 17.7 per game, added 21 in the Trojans win. Vucevic was the only player in the entire league to average a double-double for the season, leading the Pac-10 in rebounds at 10.3 per game.

Both teams have RPI numbers that are in the 60’s, so they must make a run in this tournament or find themselves playing in the NIT. Yet, both teams are playing well down the stretch. USC has won five of their last six, including victories over Arizona and Washington. Cal has won four straight games, and they are 8-4 in their last twelve contests.

Matt’s Free Prediction: USC – Just when people are ready to count USC out of things, they rise up and play inspired basketball. While the Trojans only rotate eight players, they have shown an ability to win big games when the spotlight is on them. Winning the tournament may be their only way into next week’s field of 68, but they are capable of doing so.
