Iowa State Cyclones vs. Colorado Buffaloes Preview
Colorado (19-12) can hit the important 20-win plateau if they can beat Iowa State (16-15) in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.
The only way the Cyclones can get to the Big Dance is if they won this tournament since they were only 3-13 in Big 12 play. The edge they have in this game is that they beat the Buffaloes on March 2nd by 5 points at home last week, but they did get killed at Colorado losing by 25 points. Colorado finished the season well winning 3 of their last 4 games including winning their season finale.
In their last games of the season Colorado beat Nebraska 67-57 while Iowa State lost to Kansas State 67-55.
Colorado beat 3 ranked teams this season while Iowa State did not beat one ranked team.
While Iowa State did not have a great season they were a good betting team at 15-12 ATS while Colorado was 13-11. Each team covered the spread against the other team when they were at home this season.
Iowa State has a good offense ranking 44th in the nation in scoring and they can hit the boards ranking 88th in the nation in rebounds per game, but can they play any defense? Their defense ranks 234th in the nation in opponents’ points per game and in their last 3 games they are giving up 9 more points than their season average.
Since the Cyclones do not play much D their 2 leading scores of guards Diante Garrett (17.2 ppg) and Scott Christopherson (13.9 ppg) must shoot the rock well. In the win over Colorado on March 2nd the Cyclones shot a scorching 57.1% from the floor with 5 starters scoring in double figures. If the Buffaloes allow Iowa State to do that again they will likely lose again.
Colorado has a great scoring team ranking 13th in the nation in scoring led by their backcourt of Alec Burks (19.5 ppg) and Cory Higgins (15.7 ppg). Burks was on fire before the season ending loss and he will be counted on to fill it up.
The Cyclones have a better rebounding team and to offset the scoring of Colorado they will have to win the battle of the boards like they did in the win over them a week ago.
This game is at a neutral site and that is not good for the Cyclones. The Buffaloes high scoring offense and the Cyclones weak defense equals an outcome like the first meeting of the season between the 2 teams when Colorado killed Iowa State. Look for a blowout in this game, as Colorado will easy beat Iowa State and the win will likely put them in the NCAA Tournament.
Iowa State is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. loss and Colorado is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.
