Many college basketball programs measure their success by whether or not they qualify for the NCAA Tournament. For the UCLA Bruins, the success of their program is determined by much higher standards. Their program is measured by championships.

It is against this backdrop that the Bruins begin their push for post-season glory in the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Conference tournament on Thursday as they take on the Oregon Ducks. While the UCLA program has won 30 regular season conference titles, they have only won three conference tournament championships in 13 previous attempts. UCLA finished runner-up to Arizona for the regular season title in the league.

Sophomore forward Reeves Nelson led the Bruins at 14.2 points per game while shooting an astounding 58.2 percent from the field. Junior guard Malcolm Lee (13.2 PPG), sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt (12.4 PPG), and freshman center Joshua Smith (10.8 PPG) also average double digits per contest. UCLA also enjoys a 4.5 rebound advantage per game.

The Ducks are coming a victory over Arizona State in the opening round on Wednesday by a score 76-69. Actually, the score is a misnomer because the Ducks led most of the way, expanding their lead to as many as 20 points in the second half.

Joevan Catron is the leading scorer on the season for the Ducks at 15.3 points per contest, yet he score just nine points in the win over ASU. It was E.J. Singler, brother of Duke guard Kyle Singler, who paced the Ducks scoring 22 points on 8-of-12 field goals in the win.

The Bruins swept the season series from the Ducks. UCLA won at home in Westwood by eight back in mid-January, and then won at Eugene last month by ten.

Matt’s Free Prediction: UCLA – The Bruins are on a mission to return to the NCAA Tournament as well as to win the Pac-10 championship in this first season since the passing of legendary head coach John Wooden last summer. UCLA is playing great basketball as of late, and should easily advance to the semifinals.

They will play the winner of Washington-Washington State in the next round.
