Big East 2013-2014 NCAA BB Power Rankings

1. Creighton (+250)

The Big East is certainly is better from top to bottom than the Missouri Valley Conference, but this team has been playing very good teams for a long time. Creighton has the best player in the conference in Doug McDermott. Grant Gibbs is solid as well.

The Blue Jays have the most talent in the Big East, and I think they’ll be very successful in their first season here.

2. Marquette (+250)

Buzz Williams’ team got a lot farther than most expected them to last year in the NCAA Tournament (Elite 8). The Golden Eagles must replace Vander Blue, and that will be a challenge, but there are a lot of athletic guys on this squad. They’ll play tough defense all game long and be a tough matchup for everyone in this conference.

3. Georgetown (+200)

Not only does Georgetown have to learn how to win without Otto Porter (no easy task), but they’ll have to do it without Greg Whittington after he suffered a torn ACL in the offseason. Whittington was expected to fill the role as top scorer this year, but now it will likely fall on Markel Starks and Nate Lubick.

Neither of those guys are particularly comfortable as the top scoring options.

4. Villanova (+500)

Villanova is a team with a high upside, but there are more questions here than with most teams near the top of the conference. The Wildcats got to the NCAA Tournament last year, but they were also beaten by some bad teams (lost to Columbia by 18 at home). Ryan Arcidiacano has tons of ability at the point guard spot, but he needs to play under control.

5. St. John’s (+1000)

Steve Lavin’s team showed signs of greatness last year, and they were extremely young. The Red Storm should be significantly better this season. They have the nation’s best shot blocker in Chris Obekpa. Sampson, Pointer, and Harrison should form a very nice scoring trio.

Look for this team to be better than most expect.

6.  Xavier (+800)

Semaj Christon is the best point guard in the conference. Look for Christon to have a special season. The problem for Xavier is they don’t have enough help around him. It might end up being a one-man show too often.

7. Providence (+2000)

Providence has some nice pieces in place. Kadeem Batts and LaDontae Henton are a nice combination on the inside. Bryce Cotton turned into one of the best scorers in the nation last year. If they play a little better defense, this team could be even higher on the list.

8. Butler (+1500)

Butler still has some talent to work with, but I’m not nearly on this team as I was last year. Brad Stevens was one of the top coaches in the nation, and losing him will absolutely hurt this squad.

9. Seton Hall (+2500)

Seton Hall has some talent, but they don’t play disciplined basketball often enough for me to rank them any higher than this. Taking care of the ball will be a problem for the Pirates all year.

10. DePaul (+5000)

DePaul has two stars in Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young. The rest of the team is full of question marks. It will be a surprise if they don’t finish last.

Free Pick to Win Big East:

Creighton – I’ll take a slight underdog here. The Blue Jays have the talent to do it, and this conference is wide open.
