2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Team Previews – Washington Huskies

Washington may not be the top team in the expanded PAC-12 this season, but it will be more than capable of beating anyone on a given night.

The Huskies were left out of both the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and AP Poll, but the Sporting News has them ranked as the 25th best team in the country.

Last season, Washington finished third in the then-PAC-10 with a record of 11-7. A solid run in the conference tournament, including a thrilling 77-75 overtime win over Arizona as three-point favorites in the finals, landed the Huskies the No.7 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. A trip to the Sweet 16 was cut short after losing to North Carolina 86-83 as four-point underdogs in their second game.

The early departure of Isaiah Thomas creates a huge scoring void for Washington that will hopefully be filled by the combined efforts of sophomore guard Terrence Ross and freshman guard Tony Wroten. Another key scorer that will be added to the mix is sophomore guard C.J. Wilcox, who averaged 8.1 points a game coming off the bench. Washington is also hoping that Abdul Gaddy can return to his early season form of a year ago. He was averaging 8.5 points and 3.8 assists a game before going down with a knee injury just 13 games into the season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Huskies also lost a couple of key players in the front court. Junior Aziz N’Diaye will get the start at center and they will look to Martin Breunig, Jernard Jarreau, and Shawn Kemp Jr. to add some additional depth off the bench.

Washington opens its season on November 12 against Georgia State in the World Vision Basketball Classic. The Huskies will be tested early with back-to-back games against Marquette and Duke in the first week in December. Washington finishes its regular season with a bang with games against Arizona, Washington State, USC, and UCLA.

BetOnline has the Huskies as the third-favorite at +700 to win the PAC-12 along with California. Arizona is the favorite at +110 with UCLA next at +125. Washington is a second-tier favorite to win a national title at +3500. It could take awhile for this team to get on-track this season but if all this young talent can eventually gel, the Huskies could possibly challenge both the Bruins and the Wildcats for the top spot in the conference.
