2009/2010 Season Preview: Michigan St. Spartans Predictions (Big 10)

Michigan State was simply outclassed in last season’s final, ending a season that had the city of Detroit on its back as they played the sentimental favourite. The team went further than expected but this is nothing new with coach Tom Izzo at the helm. He recruits well from his own backyard and seems to be able to get most of his players to improve as they continue through the program. They never seem to have a lot of superstars but always have a lot of winners.
This year they have one of the nation’s best point guards in Kalin Lucas, who really came into his own during last year’s title game run. This team will be in a battle with Purdue for Big 10 supremacy all year long and although they will miss their best big man from a year ago, Goran Suton who provided steady consistent play in the pivot. To stay on top this year they will need better production from former top recruit Delvin Roe. Last year was his first year back after a year off due to injury and he was not able to show the athleticism and play-making ability expected of him. Meanwhile, the lone senior on the roster, Raymar Morgan, must provide leadership as well as consistency, two years ago he was the best player on the team with an apparent NBA future. Last year he looked anything but special, sometimes serving as only the Spartans four or fifth best scoring option. If he can gets back to a high level the Spartans chances are dramatically improved.
Surprising Stat – Spartans haven’t had a shot blocking force in a while. Last year their leader was Roe who averaged only .8 BPG at 6’8″. Spartans are money away from the Breslin Center losing only 1 game away from home at Purdue. (9-1)
Strengths – With a great PG like Lucas they can play at any pace and he is adept at beating his man off the dribble in late clock situations. Izzo preaches good fundamental defense and they have enough high quality wing athletes to put pressure on most other’s teams top scorers. This team is smart and won’t often beat itself.
Weaknesses – Among top teams this squad lacks a real go-to scorer, who who can get great scoring chances even when the defense is keying on them. It will also be interesting to see how the bigs come along. If they can just be big and use their fouls effectively then they will be fine. If they are a liability this team becomes a little soft in the middle especially on defense. MSU usually outrebounds their opponents significantly. To do that again will require a total team effort.
Post Season – Likely Big- Ten champ will be in the round of 64 for sure. Behind Lucas’ steady play they should make it to the Elite Eight. Last year might have been their magic year. It is tough to make it all the way back to the title game.

Marquise Gray – A gritty contributor.

Kalin Lucas – A great PG who can play well at multiple speeds.
Durrell Summers – An up and coming scorer who plays well off Lucas.
Delvin Roe – The most highly touted Spartan recruit in a while. Everyone thinks he has next level skills but he hasn’t shown it yet.
