2009/2010 Season Preview: Kansas Jayhawks Predictions (Big 12)

  • Bodog.com Betting Odds – Kansas U Odds To Win 2009/10 National Championship – 4/1

These days every top program holds their breath hoping that top players will stay in school instead of declaring for the NBA draft. Kansas is loaded with potential pro talent and its two most important players are back on campus for another year joined by a stellar crop of incoming freshmen.

The Big 12 conference just might be tops in the nation this year so if Kansas is going to win it they will need to be sharp. They have a great small/big combo in returnees Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich, both of whom were on their most recent championship team. They had smaller roles then but are now among the top players in the country at their respective positions. Joining them is a promising group of freshmen led by one of the nation’s top recruits Xavier Henry. He will be trying to reprise the slasher/shooter wing role that Brandon Rush used to fill. Kansas beat out Memphis and Kentucky to grab him and he has the skill and body to be an important contributor, perhaps even their leading scorer.

In an odd note this hasn’t been a tranquil off-season for the Jayhawks. There have been clashes between the football and basketball teams and shooter Brady Morningstar had some trouble with the law. All this should be put behind them by the time conference play starts so there is probably not much to worry about Jayhawk fans.

Surprising Stat – They were second in the Big 12 in assists but only 11th in turnovers last year. They will need to tighten up here if they want to maximize this collection of talent.

Strengths – Kansas’ greatest strengths are balance and experience. They play at a fast pace but score both inside and out and have more than one go to guy. They also have several holdovers from their championship season, guys who know how to win like Mario Little.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Weaknesses – Outside shooting. Collins can be streaky and if Morningstar misses significant time they may find teams sagging on Aldrich, daring them to beat them from outside. Against most teams the difference in talent will be sufficient to overcome this weakness but against good teams it could be a challenge.

Post Season – Anything less than the Elite Eight will be a disappointment. I think this is where there run will end. Not quite Final Four Material.

Additions

Xavier Henry – Highly sought after recruit who could be one and done.

CJ Henry – No relation transfer from Memphis will see significant minutes.

Elijah Johnson – Heir apparent to Collins

Subtractions

No Key Losses

Key Players

Cole Aldrich – Probably the most complete big man in the country. He can score, defend and rebound. Sherron Collins – The emotional leader of the team as well as a key scorer and distributor. Xavier Henry – This freshman talent needs to be consistent for Kansas to be among the really elite teams

Projected wins

27-29

What did you mean “CJ Henry -No relation transfer from Memphis”
CJ Henry is Xavier’s older brother, man. Also you didn’t mention Elijah Johnson or Thomas Robinson–Two highly talented recruits that can handle the ball—-And Have you ever seen Xavier shoot? The man has a silky smooth touch, pardon the cliche’, but If your a fan of the 3, then watch KU this season—and follow them to another NCAA Championship!!!! Rock Chalk

My bad…CJ is certainly Xavier’s brother.

As for other members of the ’09 frosh class Johnson was mentioned above while Robinson may find it difficult to get major minutes on the wing given the talent already on the roster and the addition of Xavier Henry, who as you said is smooth. If he leaves after this year Robinson will be primed to explode as a sophomore.
