2009/2010 Season Preview: California Golden Bears Predictions (Pac10)

  • Bodog.com Betting Odds – Cal Odds To Win 2009/10 National Championship – 30/1

The consensus is that this is the worst year for the PAC 10 in recent memory. There are multiple coaching changes and the talent pool has been drawn down after a few years near the top. Part of this consensus is that California, coached by former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery and led by a standout backcourt, is likely to be the best of the bunch. I don’t think expectations have been this high since Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray were on campus. Let’s see how they handle it.

To date they are 2-0 and as expected they are being led by their backcourt duo Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher. Randle is among the top PGs in America. He is whip quick and can score and dish equally well. Christopher is a traditional big scoring guard. Both are seniors which means they can be counted on to consistently deliver. This combo really sets apart the Bears in the PAC 10.

Up front they are not nearly as talented. Jamal Boykin is a feisty bruiser and Theo Robertson can score and bang a little but nobody in the frontcourt requires much game-planning. On nights where the guards are on this team can compete with any in the country but if they ever both have an off night this team will struggle because the complimentary players are not strong enough on their own. One interesting player to watch will be Max Zhang. He is 7’3″ and a project. If he comes along he gives the teams another dimension with his size. Time will tell.

Surprising Stat

This team really excelled as a favourite last year, especially at home 11-1 SU. They should be favoured in all their home games this year.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Strengths

They have a top five backcourt that can keep up with any in the nation. With those two guys they can get a quality shot whenever they want. This makes them a tough out in any close game. Montgomery has proven he is a top tier coach with the way he has turned the program around so quickly. Players improve under his watch.

Weaknesses

This team has capable forwards but compared to other top teams they are thin up front. This won’t be exposed much in conference but will be obvious when they face top teams like Kansas who they face next month. Depth could be an issue as backups to Randle and Christopher are not nearly as good or experienced.

Additions

Brandon Smith – A small PG who can apprentice under Randle
Bak Bak – Great name. Kenyan big provides some length but not a lot is expected.

Subtractions

Jordan Wilkes – This seven footer contributed less than expected.

Key Players

Jerome Randle – Quickness helps him score and become a pest on D. Small at 5’10 his size can sometimes be a liability.
Patrick Christopher – Smooth scorer who needs to improve on 3 point shooting to get to the next level.
Jamal Boykin – Necessary physical presence who rebounds well.

Post Season

A conference championship is within their grasp this year but whether they win or not they should make the big dance. A couple of wins is about all you can expect though.
