2009/2010 Season Preview: Butler Bulldogs Predictions (Horizon League)

It seems like everyone is in love with mid-majors these days whether it football or basketball. In hoops all the love seems to be flowing to Butler but it remains to be seen whether they can live up to expectations, which are pretty high considering a lot of pre-season polls have this team in the top 10. Are they the next Gonzaga Bulldogs? We will see…they still haven’t even made it to a Final Four like fellow mid major George Mason did a couple of years ago.

How does a team like Butler get such a lofty ranking? First of all it wins…a lot, an average of 29 wins over the last three season. Second it has talent. Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward are considered among the best forwards in the country. How they wound up at Butler may be a bit of a mystery but there is no doubting they are good. And third…you beat a major or two in the Tourney, in this case a Maryland in 06′ or a Louisville in ’03.

With both good talent and experience it should be another very good season for the Bulldogs. A conference title and NCAA appearance should be a given and the fact that they seem to be getting more athletic means that they can hang with most of the big boys most of the time. They are still a little light and slight in the middle so teams with size can overpower them. There just aren’t that many in the Horizon conference. If they can beat Ohio State and Georgetown in December they might be looking at a gaudy record like St. Joseph’s a few years back.

Surprising Stat
Despite not having an imposing shot blocker or fantastic athleticism they were sixth nationally in scoring defense at 57.9 PPG. They win at a great rate both at home and away but they may be get too much respect at home. 15-2 SU but only 7-8 ATS.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Strengths
This team always stays within themselves. They work hard for shots shortening the number of possessions in a game and since they are more efficient then you they grind out victories. This is a total team which knows who is supposed to take the shots and who isn’t. They have a lot of confident and don’t back down.

Weaknesses
They do not intimidate opponents they lull them to sleep a little bit. They may draw some charges but they are vulnerable to teams that can play aggressively and smart because they are not very big. Athletic teams can have a significant advantage.

Additions
Andrew Smith – Becomes the tallest player on the roster at 6’10.
Emerson Kampen – Apparently he turned down offers to walk on at Butler. Tall but skinny
Chase Stigall – Like the name but he was lightly recruited.

Subtractions
No key losses

Key Players
Matt Howard – Was conference player of the year and is a consistent scorer and rebounder. Doesn’t look like much but can play.
Gordon Hayward – See above but a year younger.
Shelvin Mack – Adds athleticism to this this team and scoring.

Post Season
They are the overwhelming favourite to win the Horizon conference and make the NCAA Tournament. The key for them will be seeding. Expect them to win their first round game after that it will depend on matchups.

Projected wins
25-27
