There’s no time like the present for the Celtics, who own the best record in the Eastern Conference (43-15), have a 2-game edge in the loss column over both Chicago and Miami, and tonight begin a month-long schedule with very few tough games. And while Boston is hopefully cleaning up against the likes of Milwaukee, New Jersey and Charlotte, the Heat and Bulls have much more difficult dockets, with several tough road games.

All of which gives Boston’s aging roster plenty of time to tweak a rotation which has three new moving pieces, including a starting center (Nenad Krstic), a big off the bench (Troy Murphy), and a swing forward (Jeff Green) who can play both the 3 and the 4 and appears to be the logical replacement when Paul Pierce retires of is pushed out.     The result of a flurry of trades is that the Celtics will be better offensively and not as good defensively, which they’ll live with as the cost of not having to pay Kendrick Perkins $34 million. They’ll get Shaquille O’Neal back pretty soon (many observers think the Celtics just gave him a month off to rest for the playoffs) and they like what they’ve seen so far from Krstic. Green needs to get more acclimated, and Murphy will spend the rest of the year getting his legs in shape for the playoffs.

Phoenix arrives in Boston with four straight wins, including three on the road and the last two in overtime. The Suns don’t have the talent to make a deep playoff run, but Steve Nash is still among the top half-dozen point guards in the league and Phoenix has tried to compensate for the loss of Amare Stoudemire by expanding the rotation to 10 players.

NBA Trends:

Under is 7-2 in PHO last 9 road games.
PHO are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 vs. NBA Atlantic.
Over is 41-19 in PHO last 60 Wed. games.
BOS are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 Wed. games.
Under is 18-7-1 in BOS last 26 vs. NBA Pacific.
Over is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Boston.
PHO are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings in Boston.

Best Bet: The Celtics live and die with accurate shooting (No. 1 in the league) and a smothering defense led by Garnett.

But with Perkins out of the mix, the lane is opened up more for quick point guards like Nash. Sometimes Boston runs, and this should be one of those games as they try to wear down Nash, who has played 83 combined minutes in the last two games.

Liking the Over at 198.5.
