After contending with the youth, enthusiasm and emotion of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers must now deal with precision, back cuts and half-court offense of the Utah Jazz.

In a playoff series that will be dark for three full days this week, the Lakers and Jazz must kick things off with a Game 1 less than 48 hours after each dispatched their Round 1 opponents. The Lakers, in particular, could use an extra day off after chasing the Thunder around in Game 6 and winning only when OKC forgot the game’s No. 1 rule rule (box out) and let Pau Gasol sneak in for the last-second game-winner.

Now Utah, which like OKC does not have the length to deal with the Lakers’ big, mobile front line. The Jazz always seem to hit their playoff wall right about now as more-talented teams overwhelm Utah’s superior attention to detail, and kick the Jazz to the curb in 5 or 6 games.

Utah, of course, comes into the series down two bigs – Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur – both of who would have come in handy stretching the court on offense and protecting the paint on defense against the type of play that prevented the Thunder from forcing a Game 7 Sunday in Los Angeles.

Having Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol as a mammoth front line makes teams pay for double-teams on Kobe Bryant and affords the Lakers the luxury of giving a little ground at the point guard position, where Utah’s Deron Williams will have to do considerable damage to keep the Jazz afloat.

The Jazz took advantage of disarray in the dysfunctional Denver locker room to win their series in a moderately easy 6 games, but the only thing in their advantage against the Lakers is David Stern, who has already warned NBA players and coaches about criticizing officials – that takes away one of Phil Jackson’s most valuable psychological weapons.

Jazz vs. Lakers Prediction: Lakers in 6.

Western Conference parity means that only a slight advantage can go a long way. The Thunder’s inexperience and the Nuggets’ backbiting helped send both of those teams to the sidelines, and Utah’s lack of depth due to the Kirilenko and Okur injuries should be the decisive factor in this series.

There doesn’t seem any way that the Jazz can hang with Los Angeles’s front line. Since the days of Stockton and Malone the Jazz have always fought the good fight, and lost.
