A possible advanced look at the Western Conference Finals is on the slate Thursday when the Los Angeles Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs. The Lakers are the defending NBA champions and have the second-best record in the conference. San Antonio has possessed the best record in the league for most of the season.

Speaking of offense. San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili is averaging 21.3 points over the last four outings. Bryant is averaging 37 points over the last three games.

History. San Antonio’s three regular-season wins against the Lakers over the past two seasons have been by an average of 18 points. That includes a 19-point victory last April at the Staples Center.

Speaking of defensive problems. San Antonio is coming off a puzzling 99-86 loss at Portland in a game that kicked off a 9-game road trip that could go a long way toward nailing down home-court edge throughout the playoffs. At 40-8 the Spurs have a 3-game edge oiver Boston for the best overall record, and after tonight’s game against the Lakers they’ll have 6 in a row against losing teams. That’s the NBA. Meanwhile, the Lakers continue to struggle against all comers and no one can agree on whether the problem is age, boredom or the save-yourself-for-the-playoffs attitude that all veteran teams subscribe to. It’s likely that LA and Kobe Bryant will want to make some kind of statement in this one, if only to show the Spurs that they’ll have to go all out of the teams meet in a 7-game series in late May.

Trends:

Under is 11-2 in SA last 13 overall.
Under is 8-2 in SA last 10 vs. Western Conference.
SA are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
LAL are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 Thu. games.
Under is 25-10-1 in LAL last 36 Thu. games.
LAL are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Under is 20-7 in the last 27 meetings.
SA are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Looking for a nice PARLAY wager?

Best bets: Looking at the Heat to beat Orlando, with a solid play on the under as both teams continue to work to improve their defense.

In the nightcap, Los Angeles should be a little worn down after being taken to overtime by the Rockets, and SA won’t want to get the trip off to an 0-2 start.

Spurs minus the points.
