TRAIL BLAZERS vs. NUGGETS

Time: Thursday 10:30 ET
Venue: Pepsi Center, Denver
Spread: Nuggets -4.5
Over/Under: 201.592

Team records:
Portland: 46-29 SU, 42-31-2 ATS
Denver: 48-27 SU, 31-38-6 ATS

Just two short weeks ago the Nuggets had just about taken care of business.

They had won 6 straight and 8 of 9, and the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference was securely locked up in a vault in a bank in downtown Denver. All they needed to do was stay healthy and figure out the playoff rotation.

Whoops.

A loss to red-hot Milwaukee was followed by a loss to – of all teams – the Knicks, which was followed by a loss to the Celtics which was followed by a narrow win over the Raptors which was followed by a loss to the Magic which was followed by a loss to the Mavericks.

In less time that it takes to find a spot on J.R. Smith’s body for another tattoo, the Nuggets have fallen behind Utah, Dallas and Phoenix, and will probably not get home-court edge in the first round of the playoffs.

And don’t look now, but a loss at home to Portland tonight in the back end of the TNT doubleheader moves the Trail Blazers to within one game of Denver for the No. 5 seed.
The Nuggets’ decline has dovetailed with the loss of head coach George Karl, who is undergoing treatment for cancer (his return date in unknown); and forward Kenyon Martin, who is having treatment on an injured knee.

No one seems to know what the real problem is. Chauncey Billups blames himself, saying he should have taken on a bigger leadership role when Karl left the team. Carmello Anthony wants to be more of a factor on the defensive end.

Whatever the reason, Denver needs to figure out something fast. After the Blazers game the Nuggets take on the Clippers, then in the final 7 days they face five .500-plus conference opponents, with two back-to-back sets.

The total has gone OVER in 7 of Portland’s last 9 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Denver’s last 8 games
Portland is 13-4-1 ATS in its last 18 games on the road
Portland is 9-1 SU in its last 10 games
Portland is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games on the road
Denver is 12-1 SU in its last 13 games when playing at home against Portland
Denver is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games at home
Denver is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games when playing at home against Portland

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:

The 201.5 O/U seems a bit light. The Nuggets can’t seem to figure out whether they want to win by controlling tempo or pushing the ball, but they’ve given up a lot of points since Martin has been out. The last two games against the Blazers have produced 214 and 203, and with the Nuggets energized by their first home game in 12 days, they don’t figure to walk the ball up the court.

For a possible parlay, lay the points along with the over in the Magic/Mavs game.
