We’ve had more than a week to digest the Orlando Magic’s new way of thinking, and the results are pretty impressive. After that initial burp against Dallas when the Magic players were still getting to know each other, Orlando has reeled off four consecutive victories, starting with a win over the Spurs and that Christmas Day smackdown of the Celtics.

The Nets and Cavs didn’t put up much of a fight in subsequent games, but the Knicks should be a decent test in the opener of the TNT twinbill Thursday night.

New York is badly in need of a signature victory against an Eastern Conference top-tier team. The Knicks have achieved good-but-not-nearly great status at 18-13, and while they are no longer Letterman Show punch lines, neither are they included in the conversation when talk turns to teams that might be able to get by Boston or Miami in a seven-game series come April or early May.      Four losses (two to Miami, by a total of 30 points) have taken the bloom off the Knicks’ rose, and a win over the Magic would do a lot to re-establish their street cred in the Association. Problem is, they’re not playing their best ball right now, and the Magic are still like kids playing with the new toys on Christmas morning. What New York brings to the table in this one might not have much to do with anything that happens in the playoffs in the Knicks can put together a package for Carmelo Anthony.

TNT NBA Gambling Trends:

New York is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games on the road
New York is 15-5 SU in its last 20 games
The total has gone OVER in 8 of New York’s last 12 games when playing Orlando
The total has gone OVER in 4 of New York’s last 6 games when playing on the road against Orlando
Orlando is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing New York
Orlando is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing at home against New York
Orlando is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Orlando’s last 5 games

Best bets: Orlando is 4-1 covering the number since the big trades, and also 4-1 on the Over. The Magic have always relied on Howard and a boatful of 3-point shooters, and that’s hardly a recipe for a team that thinks it can win a title.

In the last five games Orlando is shooting just about 47 percent behind the arc, and that simply cannot continue as opponents begin to game-plan and Magic shooters begin to shot at their customary levels.

Reasonable bet here is on the Over (211.5), with both teams trying to outscore each other and even running after made hoops.
