SPURS vs. NUGGETS

Time: Thursday 10:30 ET
Venue: Pepsi Center, Denver
Spread: Nuggets -5.5
Over/Under: 204.5

The Nuggets’ playoff loss to the Lakers in the Western Conference finals last season seemed to make us forget just how good a run Denver actually had. From the second week of March until Games 5 and 6 against the Lakers, there was no better team in the NBA. In fact, the Nuggets were the chic pick to go all the way and actually were dead even with the Lakers at 2-2 before finally expiring.

The team that takes the court in Denver tonight in the back end of the weekly TNT doubleheader is basically the same crowd that made a run last season, and the results are pretty much the same. The Nuggets are 35-17 overall and iron-tough 23-4 at home, and own a 2-game lead over Utah in the very strong Northwest Division.

Carmello Anthony missed eight games with an ankle injury but came back and was fine in the Nuggets’ 127-91 thumping of Dallas on Tuesday night. Mello is averaging just south of 30 points a game, and were it not for the Kobe-LeBron thing he would certainly be part of the MVP conversation.

J.R. Smith has stayed out of trouble and is averaging, Nene and Big Man Andersen are giving Denver control of the boards against most teams, and Chauncey Billups is having another excellent season. Dahntay Jones was let in the offseason, but rookie Ty Lawson has filed that role and then some, in the process getting valuable minutes to he’ll be ready to take over the point when Billups departs.

Betting Trends:

Denver is 10-1 SU in its last 11 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Denver’s last 5 games
Denver is 12-3 SU in its last 15 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Denver’s last 5 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of San Antonio’s last 7 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Antonio’s last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 13 of San Antonio’s last 17 games when playing Denver
San Antonio is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games when playing on the road against Denver

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:

Orlando has won 7 of 8, but that pales in comparison to the 12 in a row the Cavs have put on the board. LeBron James says Cleveland is the best team in the league right now, and who’s to argue? The Cavs are only 7-5 ATS in their run and the Magic can make things sticky, so the play appears to be the over.

Cavs have scored in triple digits 9 times in the last 12.

San Antonio (5-8 since Jan. 15 and no longer even a decent cover team) is a good fade candidate in the nightcap. So the play is the over in the opener and Nuggets -5.5 in the second game.
