The Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks had completely different mentalities before their first round match ups. The Wizards assumed they were in for a dog fight against the Raptors. The Hawks thought they would have a walk in the park and get some time to rest while they waited for their next opponent.

That however, was not the case. Washington ran right through the Raptors en route to a 4 game sweep, while Atlanta struggled to get by the 8th seeded Nets.

Still, Atlanta handled their business in 6 games, and will now meet with the well rested Wizards in the 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs.

(5) Washington Wizards vs. (1) Atlanta Hawks

The Wizards have reached back-to-back 2nd rounds for the 2nd straight season. Now, standing in their way is the 60 win, Eastern Conference number 1 seed, the Atlanta Hawks.

Having last played April 26th, the Wizards will try to shake off some unsuspected rust. However, the long layoff did give the likes of John Wall, Martin Gortat, and Paul Pierce some much needed rest as they battled through some wounds.

As far as the Hawks go, Atlanta struggled in Games 1 and 2, but still managed to come away with slim home victories. As they looked like they had control in the series, Brooklyn had none of that as they knocked off Atlanta in Games 3 and 4 in Brooklyn. In what seemed like a must win game 5 for the number 1 seed, Atlanta once again sneaked by Brooklyn and eventually put the series to rest in Game 6.

Still, Atlanta showed some flaws and gave the Wizards a chance to see how to beat them.

The most intriguing matchup here will be the battle down low. Both teams have some solid big men with length, that will cause problems for one another.

Washington brings in C Martin Gortat and Nene. Gortat is averaging 12.2 points and 8.7 rebounds, while Nene contributes 11.0 points and 5.1 rebounds.

They’ll be going up against Hawks big men Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Horford, who averages 15.2 points a game, played a giant part in the Hawks’ Game 5 and 6 wins. Millsap, who drops in 16.7 points a game, played his best postseason game in Game 6 as he went for 25 and 9.

Whichever duo can control the paint will likely come away victorious in the series.

As far as guards are concerned, John Wall vs. Jeff Teague will be quite the interesting matchup. Teague showed his experience and leadership when the Hawks needed it most as he dropped in 20 points in Game 5 and dished out 13 assists in Game 6.

Washington has had no problem playing on the road over their past 8 playoff games. Dating back to last season, the team is 7-1 away from home. If they can steal 1 of the first 2 games, Atlanta’s backs will be against the wall.

Washington cannot allow Atlanta to get in any sort of rhythm. They struggled in Round 1, and right now the Wizards have the mental edge coming off their sweep. Still, Atlanta won 60 games in the regular season. If that 60 win team shows up early, look out.

Free Series Pick: Atlanta in 7

This series is going to be a dogfight, there is no doubt about that. Washington is playing at the highest level right now. We will see home court advantage stolen a few times here, but in the end, Atlanta clinches the series in 7 in front of their home crowd.
