Maybe it’s time for the NBA to start paying a little attention to the Bucks, who are on course to make the first round of the playoffs a living hell for either the Celtics or the Hawks.
Since the All-Star break Milwaukee has morphed into a legitimate playoff team, something that we simply have not come to expect from a state that lives Packer football even during basketball season. The Bucks head into tonight’s game in Denver at 37-30, with 7 wins their last 8 and 13 victories in the last 15. They have caught everyone by surprise – so much so that they are by far the best cover team in the league, at a ridiculous 43-23 against the spread.
The early-season in jury that shelved Michael Redd forced the Bucks into recovery mode, and without Redd getting his 15-20 shots a game, the ball was shared more than it has in the past. Rookie Brandon Jennings has played every game and is a star in the making. John Salmons, a trading deadline acquisition from Chicago, has made the Bucks a top-tier offensive team, and the development of center Andrew Bogut has been the cherry on the sundae.
In all, six players are averaging double figures, and Jerry Stackhouse is giving the team decent minutes off the bench.
If there was any doubt about Milwaukee’s arrival on the NBA scene, it was dispelled in a one-week burst when the Bucks beat – in order – Cleveland, Boston and Utah in consecutive home games in a span of 6 days. It’s doubtful even the Lakers could have accomplished that feat.
The rest of the regular season provides a mix of tough games (Boston twice, Cleveland, Phoenix and tonight at Denver) and weak sisters, and assuming to injuries to rotation players, the Bucks could make life hard for someone in the playoffs.
