When it ends for Tim Duncan, and he’s a lot closer to the finish line than to the starting line, will he go down as the most underappreciated player in NBA history?

Duncan has won a slew of awards – twice the MVP of the league and three times the MVP of the playoff Finals.

He is yearly a lock on the league’s all-defensive team. For more than a decade Gregg Popovich has been able to put Duncan down for 20-10 and spend his time dealing with the other four players on the court.

When the Spurs and Suns tip off Monday night in Phoenix Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals series, much of the attention will be on Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire, and how they restored the team to elite status.

Fans will also be trying to figure out how oft-injured Spur Manu Ginobili has turned into a scoring machine and what’s going on with George Hill.

Content in the background will be the 6-foot-11 Duncan, who is listed as a forward but plays in the paint.

Duncan’s playoff numbers (18.2 ppg and 9.5 rebounds) are virtually identical to the ones he put up during the regular season. Did anyone expect anything different?

Duncan and the Spurs were no lock to even quality for the playoffs, and they laughed at the seeding (7th) and promptly sent favored Dallas back to North Texas in 6 games.

Now the Suns stand in their way of getting to yet another conference final, and the betting line has tightened considerably. San Antonio is at +110 to win the series, with Phoenix at -130.

The Spurs figure to be in their comfort zone for this series. The Suns are not carbon copies of the Mavericks, but the teams are similar.

Nash, like Dallas’s Jason Kidd, has the ball in his hands on 100 percent of his offensive possessions, and Stoudemire is a reasonable facsimile of Dallas’s Dirk Nowitzki.

Spurs vs. Suns Prediction: Spurs in 6

In the end is will come down to execution for three quarters and then which team can play the smartest in the final 5 minutes, and that team is San Antonio. Spurs win this one in 6.
