The Chicago Bulls were expecting a boost with Carlos Boozer joining the lineup, but all they’ve done is lose since then. The Houston Rockets, meanwhile, are gaining momentum.

Houston (7-12, 9-10 ATS) is finally picking up a little bit of steam. The Rockets have won three of their past four games, including a 3-1 run against the spread. They topped Memphis 127-111 on Friday, covering as a 4.5-point underdog.

The turnaround is partly a result of improved defense. The Rockets are allowing about 105 points per outing and, though they were lit up a bit by the Grizzlies, they’ve been much better over the last week or so. In the three games leading into Friday’s meeting with Memphis, Houston allowed 99.6 points per game, with a high of 101. Perhaps not championship calibre, but certainly a major improvement.

Still, it was the offense that saved the day on Friday. Houston enjoyed its second-highest scoring output of the season thanks to a brilliant shooting night. The club made 59.5 percent of its field goals and was an absolute terror from the three-point line; the Rockets made 69.6 percent of their threes, hitting 16 in total. Brad Miller enjoyed his best game of the season, scoring 23 points. He’s been a real threat off the bench lately; in his past five games, he’s hit 20 of his 28 shots. Kyle Lowry, meanwhile, put up 28 points and 12 assists.

Chicago (9-8, 10-6-1 ATS) is headed in the opposite direction. The Bulls are 2-4 in their past six games, including back-to-back losses. They lost 104-92 in Boston on Friday, failing to cover as five-point underdogs. The Bulls have dropped two straight games ATS, snapping a five-game winning streak.

The Bulls are struggling at both ends of the floor, but the offensive problems are truly perplexing. Chicago wasn’t lighting up the scoreboard to begin with—the team is averaging 99 points per game—but the team has failed to crack triple digits in four straight games, averaging just 90 per game over that span.

It’s especially frustrating considering the Bulls just welcomed back Carolos Boozer. A high-priced free agent signed over the summer, Boozer has suited up for just two games so far—and Chicago has lost both of them. Boozer followed up his five-point debut against Orlando on Wednesday with a 12-point effort against Boston. Obviously, Chicago is expecting more.

The Bulls and Rockets hooked up once earlier this season, with Chicago winning 95-92 as a one-point favorite on the road. Chicago now has four consecutive wins over Houston (4-0 ATS). That streak should come to an end on Saturday, however. Houston is finally in a groove, while the Bulls are struggling with chemistry, especially with Boozer’s addition to the lineup. Chicago will figure it out but, until it does, you’re better off going with the Rockets.
