The Dallas Mavericks grabbed a 2-1 series lead with a 93-87 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, but the Thunder have a chance to knot things up in Game 4 on Monday.

Dallas used a brilliant defensive effort to take care of business in Game 3. The Mavericks were all over the court and did a particularly nice job on Kevin Durant, limiting the superstar to just 7-for-22 shooting. The Thunder shot just 36.5 percent from the field.

Oklahoma was especially bad from three-point range. The Thunder had a mind-bogglingly bad night, making just one of their 17 shots from downtown. The single made three-pointer didn’t come until late in the fourth quarter, when it was too little, too late.

The biggest X-factor for Dallas was Shawn Marion. It’s been a while since Marion lived up to his “Matrix” moniker, but he was all over the court on Saturday. The swingman was crucial to Dallas’ defensive effort, finishing with two steals and two blocked shots. He also gave the Mavs a much-needed spark up front, going 9-for-13 for 18 points. Marion’s offensive effort was especially important with Oklahoma City doing a brilliant job on Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki may have faced the toughest defense he’s seen this postseason, as OKC got physical and up close to the big forward. Nowitzki shot just 7-for-21 from the field and finished with 18 points, his second-worst output of the playoffs. Although Nowitzki played much better in the fourth quarter, that’s something for the Thunder to hang their hats on after a tough loss.

Besides defense, there wasn’t much else positive to take from the loss for OKC. Russell Westbrook scored 30 points, but he also turned the ball over seven times. The overall shooting was obviously a wreck, especially from Durant. And everyone else was terrible, as Westbrook and Durant were the only two players to score in double figures.

But now the Thunder will be particularly desperate, and they proved they can at least keep Nowitzki in check. Durant is a great candidate to bounce back. After going 3-for-14 and scoring just 11 points in Game 6 against the Grizzlies, he followed up with a 39-point explosion. Expect similar things and an Oklahoma City win and cover on Monday night.

I’m feel sorry to the Oklahoma Thunder fans, Dallas defeat the thunder this night to improved to 3-1, which is not good for the thunder. Mavs is just one win away from the NBA finals. Nowitzki is Mr. 4th quarter in thus series.
