The Houston Rockets will need to play with a sense of urgency when they welcome the San Antonio Spurs to the Toyota Center Friday. Three games out of the final playoff spot in the Western conference with seven to play, the Rockets could very well sweep the remainder of the schedule and still finish behind the three teams they can still potentially catch in the standings. Just one game separates the sixth-place New Orleans Hornets from the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies at the bottom of the elite eight in the west.

Kevin Martin and his teammates have played much better in front of their home crowd in Texas than they have on the road, and they will need the support of the fans on hand in order to get past a powerful San Antonio squad. Even despite their recent struggles the Spurs still own the best record in the NBA, and after falling 107-97 to the Boston Celtics in Tim Duncan’s return to the lineup, they should be even more eager to bounce back. San Antonio has lost a season-high five straight games, and are now just two-and-half games back of the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers at the top of the conference. Duncan scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in his return after missing four games with a sprained ankle, while Tony Parker dropped a team-high 23. The NEW BetOnline

While there is still time to make the necessary corrections, and there is the obvious role that injuries have played in their slide, the Spurs will enter Friday night’s action with a sense of urgency. For a team that had just nine losses at the All Star break, a defeat at the hands of the Rockets would push them within three of matching that total over the past couple of weeks. San Antonio will need more from Manu Ginobili, who also returned on Thursday but didn’t play to his potential. Ginobili scored nine on just 4-of-13 shooting, and it may take a couple of games before he hits his stride. Richard Jefferson is another key piece that the Spurs will need to step up, as the team has won 17 of 18 games when their star forward has scored at least 15.

The Rockets will force the issue with an aggressive style that should make this a low scoring game. Houston is 17-1 at home this season when they allow 102 points or fewer, and with San Antonio traveling across the country for the second of back-to-back games, the Rockets should be able to take advantage. The under should be a given.
