It’s true that the Los Angeles Lakers still trail the San Antonio Spurs by seven games in the loss column as the race for Western Conference playoff seedings enters the final six weeks of the NBA regular season.
However, with that having been said, the Lakers are still the clear favorite to win the NBA world championship in 2011.
The Lake Show played what was by far its best game of the season on Sunday, marching into San Antonio and destroying the Spurs in a game that was much more lopsided than the final 99-83 margin.
The Lakers roared to a 34-13 lead after one quarter and then surged even more in the second stanza, grabbing a 65-37 lead to firmly put the Spurs away. Everyone and everything on the Lakers roster clicked into high gear, as the defending champions made the kind of statement that will resonate throughout the rest of the league.
On Tuesday, they will face the Atlanta Hawks, who are a very up-and-down team that is still adapting to their new point guard Kirk Hinrich. They apparently seem to miss Mike Bibby a little bit more than they thought.
Atlanta is a playoff team, but a mercurial one, and after getting whipped at home by the New York Knicks on Sunday night, the Hawks can’t be full of confidence for this date with Kobe Bryant and the rest of an awakening juggernaut. Take the Lakers because they’re better, tougher, taller, and really confident at the present moment.
