The New York Knicks are probably the biggest surprise in the NBA so far this year. The Knicks didn’t start out well, but they are playing some of the best basketball in the NBA over the last few weeks. The Boston Celtics look out to get back to the NBA Finals again this year, and this veteran team appears to be rejuvenated. Can the Knicks step up against the best team in the East? Are the Celtics ready for a big challenge on the road? We’ll find out Wednesday night on ESPN in this terrific matchup.
The Boston Celtics have been playing terrific basketball, but they do have some injury problems right now. Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t played the last couple games and he is questionable for this game. Kendrick Perkins is another key piece that will be out for at least another month or two. Jermaine O’Neal and Delonte West are also out, which thins the bench a little bit. The good news for Boston is that they still have plenty of very capable players on the bench. The starters have been great this year as well. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are both having even an better year than last year, and Rajon Rondo continues to develop as a point guard. Boston is first in field goal percentage offense as well as points per game allowed on defense, so this is a well-rounded team.
The New York Knicks started the season 3-8 and many people were writing them off for the season already. Amazingly, this team has gone 13-1 in their last 14 games, and they currently riding an eight game winning streak. Amar’e Stoudemire has been a huge pickup for the Knicks, and he has brought his best game on a nightly basis. New York leads the NBA in points per game at 108.5 so far this year. Not many look closely at a team’s free throw percentage, but the Knicks are shooting a staggering 81.2% from the line this year, and that has no doubt helped them win several close games. The Knicks are allowing opponents to shoot 47.2%, which is a number they will want to improve on as the season moves along. Raymond Felton has done a great job at the point guard spot for this team, and he is the unsung hero of the offense right now. New York is certainly a much improved team, but now they will be looking to prove they can beat the best.

I like this Knicks team, but I really think they are due for an off game sometime soon. Since they don’t play good defense, they rely on knocking down shots to win. The Celtics defense will likely give them problems on Wednesday. Boston would love nothing better than to end the Knicks streak. I think Boston wins and covers the spread here.
