The Los Angeles Lakers picked up their biggest win of the year on Sunday when they beat Miami 93-83. Miami came into that game playing brilliant basketball, but the Lakers defense shut them down nicely.

Can the Lakers keep that momentum going after a slow start to the season? Detroit is just 12-26 on the season, but they have won four of their last eight games.

The Lakers have won three in a row and five of their last six overall. Kobe Bryant may be wearing a mask, but it certainly isn’t affecting him in a negative way. Bryant has scored 31, 38, and 33 points three games since being injured on a hard foul from Dwyane Wade at the All-Star game.

Kobe has been very good all year, but it has been the improved play of people around him that has this team playing better right now. Pau Gasol seems to be rounding into form after a bad start.

Andrew Bynum is absolutely dominating the boards. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

He has nine straight games with double figures in the rebounding column. The Lakers are second in the NBA in field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting just 41.7% from the floor.

Detroit has shown signs of progress over the last few weeks. This is a very young team who looked terrible at the beginning of the season, but some of their budding stars are improving as the season moves along.

Greg Monroe leads the team in scoring at 16.7 points per game, and he also leads the team in rebounding at 10.1 boards per contest. Brandon Knight has scored 15 points or more in six of the team’s last nine games. Ben Gordon is listed as questionable for this game, and he is a guy they really need to have due to his ability knock down perimeter shots.

Defensively, Detroit allows opponents to shoot 47.4% from the field.

The Lakers are liable to come out a bit flat here, but they’ll likely recover in time to win. Detroit will struggle to hold their own on the boards.

Prediction: Lakers 95 Pistons 89
