Los Angeles Lakers (28-11)

Weren’t the Lakers “struggling”? That idea was short-lived. The two-time defending NBA champs have a chip on their shoulder of late; they’ve won five straight games. They aren’t just winning, either; three of those five wins were by more than 20 points. The Lakers are angry.

Their anger culminated in an utter humiliation of the Cleveland Cavaliers last night; the Lakers won 112-57. That’s a 55-point victory margin. LeBron James loved it enough to Tweet about it.

Kobe Bryant only had 13 points last night because Phil Jackson rested his starters once the game got out of hand but, for the most part, he’s been solid this season, averaging 24.9 points per game. Kobe arguably hasn’t been as dominant this year but he’s had good support. Pau Gasol is averaging 18.4 points and has been a real beast on the boards; he has three straight games with at least 13 rebounds. Lamar Odom is also having his best season in years.

Ron Artest and the Lakers’ 10th-ranked scoring defense will get a solid test tonight against an offensively dynamic Golden State team. It’s a big step up from what Cleveland brought to the table last night.

Golden State Warriors (15-22)

The Golden State Warriors make a lot of noise for a 15-22 squad, don’t they? Monta Ellis has emerged as a supposed “MVP candidate” on a non-playoff team. Stephen Curry is shooting 42.4 per cent from three-point range; the Warriors are tops in the league in long-distance shooting. David Lee is trying to work through his injury woes and has been effective more nights than not.

But the Warriors are still a ho-hum 2-3 over their last five games. The reason: no defense. They allow 105.9 points per game, good for 28th-best in the league. Until they learn how to stop opponents from scoring, they won’t sniff a playoff berth.

The pick:

It’s tempting to predict an offensive explosion for Golden State against a Laker team that could be complacent after winning so big last night. But history is not on the Warriors’ side. The Warriors have lost 11 straight to the Lakers, a streak spanning roughly three years. L.A. has also beaten the spread eight times in its last 10 trips to the Bay Area.

Worse yet for Golden State, Monta Ellis is a game-time decision tonight because of flu-like symptoms. Even if he plays, he won’t be 100 per cent.

Pick the Lakers with confidence. The numbers favor them overwhelmingly and Ellis’ possible absence is gravy.
