New York Knicks (21-15)

Finally, the Mecca is alive again. The New York Knickerbockers are relevant for the first time since, when, the days of Patrick Ewing? They’ve won three of four and, in their last eight games, they’re 5-3. That number may not seem so impressive but it is when you consider that the three losses were at the Lakers, at Orlando and at Miami. They also beat San Antonio, Chicago and Oklahoma City over that stretch. The Knicks’ schedule has been vicious of late and they’re surviving.

Why? Because they score and score and score some more. Under offensive dynamo coach Mike D’Antoni, the Knicks lead the NBA with 107.6 points per game. Amar’e Stoudemire continues his MVP-caliber campaign, averaging 26.3 points and 9.1 boards. Raymond Felton continues to show he was a fabulous offseason acquisition, playing quarterback and leading the team in assists.

Not surprisingly under D’Antoni, defense doesn’t come naturally for the Knicks. They’re third-worst in the Association with 106.3 points allowed per game.

Portland Trail Blazers (20-18)

Aren’t the Blazers supposed to be struggling without Brandon Roy? They didn’t get the memo. Portland has won four of six, with one of its two defeats coming to the powerhouse Heat in overtime. Stepping up for Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge has become the team’s go-to scorer. His 20.5 points per game would be a career-best mark by season’s end.

Grizzled vets like Andre Miller and Marcus Camby have given Aldridge good support lately. Wesley Matthews has broken out in his first year with the Blazers and second in the league but he’s wildly inconsistent. Over his last 10 games, Matthews has two 30-point games, two 20-point games, four games between 10 and 15 points and two games with single-digit points. Who knows what he’ll do tonight?

The pick:

The Blazers have been a pleasant surprise without Roy but It’s only a matter of time before the injury catches up to them; look at Dallas without Dirk Nowitzki. The Knicks have been one of the league’s best bets this year, going 23-12-1 against the spread and 14-5 ATS on the road. After getting pummelled and held to just 87 points by the Lakers on Sunday, they should be hungry to bounce back. Pick New York.
