Oklahoma City Thunder

The general feel among Oklahoma City fans and NBA pundits is that it’s only a matter of time before the Thunder win an NBA Championship. It may take a few more years but the progress has been steady in the Kevin Durant era.

Once again, Durant leads the NBA in scoring, averaging 29.2 points per game. Through Thursday’s action, he had dropped 40-plus points in three of his last four games. Predictably, the Thunder’s record continues to improve. Durant has also enjoyed nice support from fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook and the underrated Jeff Green.

From a betting perspective, however, Oklahoma City has been lukewarm. It was gold last season when it sneaked up on the competition. This year, all the love for Durant inflates the spreads for the Thunder and they’re just 24-24 ATS as a result. Entering Friday’s battle with Phoenix, they were just 2-6 ATS over their last eight games.

Utah Jazz

Utah, Utah, Utah. What are we gonna do with you?

Doesn’t feel strange to see one of the NBA’s most reliable second-tier contenders in a tailspin this season? The freefalling Jazz have lost eight of 10. The main source of their struggles appears to be a sudden offensive drought. Utah has scored fewer than 100 points in seven of 10 and 86 points or fewer four times in its last seven games.

We can’t really blame Deron Williams. The All-Star is still one of the game’s best playmakers and leads the team with 21.9 points per game. But his support is dwindling. Excluding the one game he’s played in February, Paul Millsap’s scoring average has declined every month in sequence this season. All Jefferson has been a beast on the boards but his scoring has been spotty.

The pick:

I don’t see an end to Utah’s troubles in the near future. If you’re struggling to score, the last guy you want to face is Kevin Durant. Seriously – the Jazz are regularly scoring in the 80s of late and Durant alone is regularly tossing up 40-point nights. It’s a recipe for disaster.

The Jazz are still good enough to rebound – but it won’t happen against a dynamic offensive team like Oklahoma City. Utah likely can’t keep up.

Trends:

Over is 8-2 in OKC last 10 vs. NBA Northwest.
OKC are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
OKC are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Sat. games.
UTA are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games overall.
UTA are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Over is 35-16 in UTA last 51 vs. NBA Northwest.

Prediction: Thunder 106, Jazz 98
