Charlotte Bobcats (15-24)

The Charlotte Bobcats had some nice momentum going last week, winning four straight and beating five straight spreads, but they’ve erased that in a hurry. Charlotte travels to Chicago tonight having lost three straight games.

The Bobcats do a decent job defending, ranking 11th in the league in scoring defense, but they’re 28th in offense. They’ve failed to reach 100 points in five straight games. They’re getting respectable seasons out of guys like Stephen Jackson but the Bobcats don’t have that trusty 20-points-a-night scorer to rely on.

Chicago Bulls (28-13)

The Chicago Bulls have been one of the league’s best teams for a couple of months now. They’ve won five of their last six games, beating up on the weak but also taking out big guns like the Celtics and Heat over that span. Unlike many NBA powerhouses, the Bulls typically do well against the spread, going 23-16-2 on the year.

What’s the Bulls’ secret? Maybe it’s their depth. Derrick Rose has been far-and-away their best player but, if he falters on a given night, there’s always someone else to step up. Carlos Boozer has been a force under the basket; with this 28-point effort last night against Memphis, Luol Deng showed he can be the man, too.

One problem for the Bulls: Boozer may not play tonight. He missed last night’s matchup with an ankle injury and is questionable for tonight. If he can’t play, that would leave the Bulls without two key starters: Boozer and Joakim Noah, who remains out with a thumb injury.

The pick:

The Bulls to win outright is a fairly safe bet tonight. Chicago is 18-3 at home this season and the Bobcats are 4-14 on the road. Also, the home team has won seven of the last eight meetings between these two teams.

But what about the spread? The last six Bobcats/Bulls games have been decided by seven, three, five, eight, nine and five points. They always play each other close. Factor in Boozer’s possible absence, not to mention that Chicago played a road game last night undermanned, and I think the Bulls will have to grind out a close one tonight.

Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 4 of last 6 games when playing Chicago
Charlotte is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games when playing Chicago
Charlotte is 1-6 SU in its last 7 games when playing on the road against Chicago
Charlotte is 1-11 SU in its last 12 games on the road
Chicago is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
Chicago is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Charlotte
Chicago is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
The total has gone UNDER in 12 of last 18 games at home
