In Denver, George Karl likes what he sees so far from the Nuggets sans Carmelo Anthony. Denver is 2-1 since Anthony traded himself to New York, the one loss coming when the Nuggets couldn’t get a hoop with a pocket full of 50s down the stretch and lost to Portland in overtime. Moving to the Rockies could be a godsend for Danillo Gallinari, who scored 30 against the Blazers in the overtime loss.

Karl, in fact, looks genuinely relieved not to have to deal with a diva superstar like Carmelo Anthony whom he had to constantly coach up defensively, and the Nuggets can finish the season with a scrappy group and that do its best imitation of the little engine that could. The veteran coach says that he is perfectly content going forward without having one of the top 10 players in the league on his roster.

“The formula is you’ve got to have three great players. Why? Why are we hung up on this? Everybody says you can’t win playing fast in the NBA. You can’t win a championship playing fast. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

It wins in Europe. It wins in the NCAA championships. You can’t play pressure defense in the NBA? Why not? I don’t think it’s really sensible to try to win like everybody else is trying to win. . . . I think (the new-look Nuggets) can be good. I think we could be good this year. I think there are things this team will do that will be better than the team we just lost.”

We’ll see about that. It’s easy to talk about forcing a fast tempo, but Karl might be singing a different tune three weeks from now. After the Hawks and Charlotte at home, Denver plays seven of the next eight on the road, finishing the trip with a Friday/Saturday back-to-back at Orlando and at Miami.

 NBA Trends:

Under is 8-0 in ATL last 8 Mon. games.
DEN are 3-12-2 ATS in their last 17 Mon. games.
Over is 8-2 in DEN last 10 vs. Eastern Conference.
Over is 6-2 in DEN last 8 overall.
ATL are 14-5 ATS in the last 19 meetings.
ATL are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Denver.

Best Bets:  Therapy is in order for anyone who would take the Hawks on the road in the second game of a back-to-back late in the season. Denver will push the ball at every chance against a Hawk team that has been on the road since Valentine’s Day.
