The Lakers have won 10 NBA titles in the past 10 years while the Knicks are still searching for their first championship since 1973, having not won a playoff game since 2001.

New York can inch one-step closer to that elusive target when they host Los Angeles in a clash of the Coasts on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

Kobe and Co. will take the floor at the Garden with 11 more wins than the Knicks have at this point in the season, as New York has struggled since mid January, losing 10 of their past 14 including a 116-108 defeat at the hands of LA’s little brother, the Clippers on Wednesday night. Amare Stoudemire scored 23 points for the Knicks, but was hindered by foul trouble and critisized the team’s lack of effort after the loss.

The Euros were hot as Danilo Gallinari chipped in 21 points and Timofey Mozgov had 18 on 8 of 9 shooting, but was benched late in the game as NY changed up their offensive strategy.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have won four out their last five including a 92-86 win at Boston on Thursday night. Bryant scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half, as Los Angeles rallied from an early 15-point deficit.

Pau Gasol contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds while Carmelo Anthony trade rumor subject Andrew Bynum, finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Lakers thumped the Knicks 109-87 on back Jan. 9 at the Staples Center in what turned into a testy match that was highlighted when Ron Artest dropped Stoudemire on a drive to the bucket late in the third quarter. Bryant and Stoudemire also exchanged words moments later in a game that ended with 40 fouls, including four technicals and one flagrant for LA.

The trio of Bryant, Bynum-who was ejected in the fourth quarter–and Gasol combined for 65 points and 21 rebounds as the Lakers dominated undersized New York in the paint and on defense. The Knicks didn’t click all night, making just 36 percent of their shots.

New York started the season 3-8, but won eight in a row and 13 of 14 to climb back in the chase. Now with a loss on Friday, the Knicks will fall to the .500 mark for the first time since Nov. 28, when they were 9-9.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Lakers

The Lakers will no doubt be road weary having battled the Celtics just 24- hours before. Thankfully, it’s a short trip from Beantown to the Big Apple, so the team should be able to get some rest before the pregame shootaround. As for the Knicks, it just depends on which team shows up. You can count on one thing.

Although the Knicks haven’t been playing their best basketball of the season recently, they always get up for a big home game, which means things should remain interesting until the final buzzer in this one against their rival from the left coast.
