The Dallas Mavericks have already clinched a playoff berth but will look to finish out the regular season strong, starting with a win over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night on ESPN.

The Suns fell three games out of the final playoff spot in the West as the New Orleans Hornets rallied from a seven-point deficit to deliver a crushing blow to Phoenix’s playoff hopes, 106-100 on Friday.

Phoenix, who has the highest-scoring bench in the NBA (40.7 points per game), scored a season-high 65 points, but it wasn’t enough as they blew an 85-78 lead with 9:54 to play.

Outside of Grant Hill who had a team-high 18 points, and Channing Frye who chipped in with 14, the other Suns’ starters put on a miserable performance that has to leave fans and coaches shaking their heads.

Phoenix, already playing without Mickael Pietrus, Vince Carter, and Marcin Gortat who left the game with a broken nose with four minutes left in the third quarter, also received a subpar effort from PG Steve Nash. The veteran starter made only one of nine field-goal attempts and managed three points with five turnovers to finish the contest.

The Suns were 11 of 18 from 3-point range, giving them just eight in the five games.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are beginning a season-long six-game road trip that includes three back-to-backs and finishes with four games in five days. Four of the opponents are in the Western Conference playoff picture, including the Los Angeles Lakers. Depending on the outcome, Dallas could be in position to challenge LA for the second seed or drop to fourth.

Dallas clinched their 11th consecutive 50-win season with Thursday’s win over Minnesota. Only two franchises in league history have had longer streaks.

The Mavs and Suns have met two times this season, with Dallas winning 106-91 at home back on Dec 17, and then snatching a 112-106 victory at Phoenix on February 17.

DAL are 6-1-2 ATS in their last 9 Sun. games.

PHO are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.
PHO are 15-7-2 ATS in their last 24 Sun. games.

Matt’s Free Prediction: At this point in the season, the Mavs could be on autopilot as they try to preserve a veteran lineup for the playoffs.  That could result in turning over an easy victory.  However, I suspect that they will give plenty of minutes to their starters in the first half, and then clamp down on defense to win this one on the road.
