L.A. Lakers vs. New Orleans Hornets Preview
Kobe Bryant showed no ill affects of a sprained ankle leading the Lakers to a Game 5 win to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead in this series. Chris Paul played pretty good, but he did not have a huge game and the Lakers out-scored the Hornets by 13 points in Game 5 for a comfortable 16-point win. NBA lines have the Lakers as 5-point favorites with a total of 184.
The Lakers won Game 5 106-90 and they covered the spread with the total going Over.
This season the Lakers are 41-45-1 ATS and the Hornets are 42-43-2 ATS. The Lakers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against the Hornets in New Orleans.
The reason the Lakers won Game 5 was not Kobe, even though he did his part with 19 points on 8/13 shooting, but it was the play of their frontcourt, which dominated in the paint. Andrew Bynum really played well with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom combined to score 29 points and pull down 15 boards. The Hornets have not match for this trio and if they use their size again and rule the lane in Game 6 they will end this series in the Big easy.
Trevor Ariza had another solid game in the Hornets loss on Tuesday night with 22 points and Marco Belinelli chipped in for 21, but Carl Landry only had 8 points in the game and Ariza only scored 6 points in the 2nd half. Paul needs help on offense, but he is still the key, as in both of the Hornets wins in this series he has had stellar outings.
The Lakers shot 49.3% from the floor in Game 4 and every starter as well as 6th man Odom scored in double figures. With Kobe having 19 points in Game 5 only taking 13 shots it showed the Lakers are a much better team when he does not take a ton of shots and the Lakers spread the offense around. New Orleans has to keep the other guys from the Lakers racking up the points, as if they cannot they will be done in this series.
The Lakers are on the verge of winning this series and they will not waste that opportunity. Look for Bynum, Gasol, and Odom to have another solid game and Kobe will keep Paul from blowing up, as the Lakers will win the game and cover the spread.
