L.A. Lakers vs. Memphis Grizzlies Preview
The Memphis Grizzlies (27-25) are coming off a loss, but are 8-2 in their last 10 games and tonight they host the defending champion L.A. Lakers (35-16). NBA lines have the Lakers as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 195.5.
In their last games both teams played on Saturday with the Lakers beating the New Orleans Hornets 101-95 and the Grizzlies losing to the Houston Rockets 95-93 in OT.
This season the Grizzlies are 16-7 at home and the Lakers are 16-8 on the road.
Memphis has been one of the best betting teams in the league this season at 32-19-1 ATS while the same cannot be said about the Lakers at 22-28-1 ATS. The Lakers are only 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in Memphis and only 1-4 ATS overall in their last 5 games facing the Grizzlies.
This season the Grizzlies have beaten the Lakers 2 out of 3 games. One key player for the Lakers is PF Pau Gasol (18.7 ppg), who played great in Saturday’s win scoring 34 points and grabbing 10 boards. When he scores at least 20 ppg the Lakers are 12-2 on the season. Gasol has only averaged 15.3 ppg against Memphis, which is where he spent the first 6 years of his career.
Even though Pau is in La La Land there is a still a Gasol in Memphis in brother Marc (11.9 ppg 7 rpg). He and Zach Randolph (20.1 ppg 13.3 rpg) not only have to provide the Grizzlies with some inside offense, but they also have to keep Pau, Lamar Odom, and Andrew Bynum off the boards.
Rudy Gay (20.1 ppg) recorded his 2nd straight double-double in the loss to Houston, but can he score with Kobe Bryant guarding him? The Black Mamba has to contain Gay and if he can it gives the Lakers a great chance to win. Gay is averaging 23.7 ppg on 55.8% shooting against the Lakers this season.
Speaking of Kobe (25.5 ppg) he scored 32 points in the Hornets win and in the last 15 games against the Grizzlies he has averaged 33.5 ppg. He will get his points tonight, but he will need help on offense, as this season has showed when Kobe has to shoot a ton and carry the offense the Lakers are not a great team.
If Gay struggles Mike Conley (13.5 ppg) will have to take up the scoring slack. He and Gay will likely have to carry the offensive load, as the Lakers have 3 trees inside making it difficult for Randolph to get easy buckets in the paint.
Memphis only ranks 24th in the league in assists per game and that may hurt them tonight. If they do not have good ball movement the Lakers can settle back on D, which plays to their strength on that end of the court.
While the Grizzlies have played well against the Lakers this season I think the win over New Orleans may have been turning point to the season for the Lakers. Pau Gasol needs to be more assertive on the offensive end of the court and he did just that in the Hornets game. That will continue tonight, as he will have another good game and Kobe and the Lakers will play solid defense. The Lakers will win this game and cover the 3.5-point spread winning their 2nd straight on the road.

While the Grizzlies have an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 home games I would stay away from the O/U in this game, as the Lakers will play good defense. On top of that the Lakers have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games against teams that have a winning record.
