Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview

Tonight in a Southwest Division match up the San Antonio Spurs (39-7) host the Houston Rockets (22-26). NBA lines have the Spurs as 8.5-point favorites with a total of 211.

The Spurs have won 2 straight and have the best record in the NBA while the Rockets need to take off to get in the playoff picture. Even though they are 5-5 in their last 10 games they are coming off a loss and they are in the basement in the Southwest Division.

San Antonio has been a good betting team on the season going 27-17-2 ATS and while the Rockets are 4-games under .500 on the season they have still been a decent bet at 24-22-2 ATS. In the last 11 games in San Antonio the Rockets have covered the spread 8 times.

In their last games the Rockets lost to the Dallas Mavericks 111-106 on Thursday night while the Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 112-105 on Wednesday night.

The Spurs have won 17 straight home games and they look to make it 18 tonight before they head out on a 9-game road trip.

San Antonio has been mediocre on defense on the season ranking 12th in the league in opponents’ points allowed, but in their 17-game home winning streak their D has been stellar. In that span, where they have not lost at home since November, they are holding opponents to only 41.9% shooting and 91.6 ppg.

Houston’s D has been terrible this season ranking 25th in the league in opponents; points allowed. They have a tall task tonight against a Spurs’ squad that ranks 5th in points per game. Sure, the Rockets rank 4th in points scored, but their defense is key tonight. When they allow opponents to shoot at least 45% from the field they are only 9-22 on the season. NBA Betting

Kevin Martin (23.3 ppg) not only has to provide offense tonight, but he has to keep Tony Parker (17.5 ppg) from having a big game. Parker has been a thorn in the side for Houston, as in his last 5 games facing them he is averaging 22.4 ppg and 10.1 assists.

One key match up in this game is at the PF position between Tim Duncan (13.6 ppg 9.5 rpg) and Luis Scola (19.6 ppg 8.3 rpg). If Duncan can bring Scola out of the lane and knock down the mid-range jumper the Spurs will be tough to beat.

Manu Ginobili (18.7 ppg) creates match up problems for every team in the league with his style of play. He had a stellar game in the win over Utah on Wednesday with 26 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. The Rockets must contain him and keep him from putting up those types of numbers again.

SF Shane Battier will be counted on to play good D tonight not only on Ginobili, but Richard Jefferson (12.2 ppg) as well. Both of these players for the Spurs can knock down the 3 and if they are given open looks tonight they will knock down the deep ball. Martin cannot allow Parker to penetrate in the lane, as if that happens the defense will collapse and he can kick it out to the long-range bombers.

Houston 6th man Aaron Brooks (12.2 ppg) has to snap out of his shooting slump, as in his last 7 games he is only shooting 26.8% from the field.

The Rockets have the offense, but can their Swiss cheese defense keep the Spurs and their many scorers from lighting up the scoreboard? Not likely. Houston is only 9-16 on the road and they will get spanked tonight against a better Spurs’ team, as San Antonio will win this game, no problem, and cover the 8.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Houston is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games and San Antonio is 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 home games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Even though the last 4 games between these 2 division rivals has gone Over the O/U pick is a tough one since the Spurs play such good defense at home.

Pick: Spurs -8.5
