Suns Gone Bad?

The Phoenix Suns who started the season with a great 14-3 record have now lost five of seven. Five straight road games have been losers, but they will return home to face the Spurs on Tuesday. Suns have won 17 straight dating back to last season at home. Their 8-0 record at home is not that impressive as they have just 1 home win vs. a winning team. We really do not know if this team is the real deal or not yet.

Suns showed the inability to close out games as they blew a 17-point lead in a loss to the Denver Nuggets over the weekend. Steve Nash said, “We were a little tired and a little stagnant when we were up 17 and let them back in the game.” Suns did cover the 8 point spread in Denver and it just goes to show you how difficult it is to win at high elevation in Denver late in a game.

Tonight, they will face a Spurs team that uncharacteristically is struggling on defense and like the Suns has yet to show a consistent form of winning.

Timmy…Timmy

What is ironic about the Spurs inconsistent play is Tim Duncan’s knees are not what they were earlier in his career. Duncan a 13-year Center is being rested more and more by Coach Gregg Popovich. Popovich told the San Antonio Express News that he will be limiting Duncan’s minutes to 32 a game in hopes of resting Duncan for the stretch run this spring. Limiting Duncan’s minutes is a sure thing to get inconsistent play and I do not recommend putting your money on these guys often.

Duncan has seen his minutes cut every single year since his career high of 40.6 minutes per game in 2001-02. Duncan currently is averaging just 32 minutes a game, his lowest of his career.

Suns injury front?

Jason Richardson, Suns guard, may miss tonight’s game as he sprained his right hand against Denver on Saturday night. Richardson did not practice on Monday despite the X-ray being negative.
Richardson will be a game time decision and could impact what the Suns do on Tuesday. Look for Jared Dudley and Goran Dragic to see more minutes if he can not play.

Hitting The Road

The current three-game road trip is the Spurs longest road trip of the season so far. Manu Ginobili told reporters that the team is in fact looking forward to the road trip, because it is something that allows him to get to know the new guys better.

It won’t matter if he gets to know them better if they don’t play better. Sunday’s win over the Clippers was just the Spurs second road victory of the season.
