Team records:
San Antonio: 50-32 SU, 44-37-1 ATS
Dallas: 55-27 SU, 36-44-2 ATS

Coaches would gladly sell their first-born into slavery in exchange for a psychological edge in the playoffs, and Gregg Popovich is no different.

Matchup: SPURS vs. MAVERICKS

Time: Wednesday 9:30 ET
Venue: American Airlines Center, Dallas
Spread: Mavericks -4
Over/Under: 194.5

His team shoots 50 percent from the field in the opening game against a tough opponent, and Pop calls out his team, saying they played like dogs. OK.

But as Game 2 gets ready to tip off tonight, Pop should be more worried about the Mavericks than his own team. Dallas is flat-out better than the Spurs, and after years of playoff exits, near-misses and disappointment, they finally seem to get it. Dirk Nowitzki is still the same dominating force on the offensive end and still breaks hearts with 20-footers as the shot clock is winding down, but Dallas is no longer less than the sum of its parts. Part of the reason is the mid-season heist of Caron Butler, who somehow can find the crease in even the most collapsing of defenses. Butler gives the Mavericks a second scoring option in case the Spurs try to do anything funky with Nowitzki, making things easier on aging Jason Kidd and forcing San Antonio’s defense into uncomfortable decisions.

San Antonio still has some weapons. Tony Parker is on the mend and ready to go 40 minutes. Manu Ginobili is playing the best basketball of his career.

The problem is Tim Duncan, who is beginning to labor.

The Spurs need Duncan to play 40 minutes a game, but the Big Fundamental’s ailing right knee is starting to take an opposing point of view.

The play here looks like the under at 194.5.

No one figures this series to be over early, and even the Mavericks are preparing for a long war.

With that in mind, we’re not looking for helter skelter in Game 2. San Antonio needs to settle down and play decent halfcourt ball after 17 turnovers in Game 1, and Dallas would be comfortable forcing the Spurs to dig in and work hard for 20 seconds each possession.

It would be a surprise if either team shot as well as it did in the opener – San Antonio was 50 percent from the field, Dallas better than 47 percent.
