Team records:
Phoenix: 54-28 SU, 48-32-2 ATS
L.A.: 57-25 SU, 34-46-2 ATS

It’s impossible to understate how devastating a loss Sunday night would be to the Celtics’ championship hopes, even with the next three games moving to Boston.

Matchup: CELTICS vs. LAKERS

Time: Sunday 8:00 ET
Venue: Staples Center, Los Angeles
Spread: Lakers -6
Over/Under: 190

Yes, the Celtics could win three in a row at home, but not likely against a team as long and talented as Los Angeles.

No, the time for a stand is right here and right now. The only question is whether the aged-and-looking-older-by-the-minute Celtics can circle the wagons.

Game 1 was a rude awakening for Boston after playoff series wins over Miami, Cleveland and Orlando, and even folks in New England seem to be having doubts that they can win four of the next six games against a Laker team that appears far more ready than it was when the teams met in the 2008 Finals.

The Lakers are virtually unbeatable when they take care of business inside the foul line, and Boston’s bigs were taken to school. Pau Gasol overwhelmed a tired-looking Garnett (who had had a week off) and Andrew Bynum played Kendrick Perkins to a draw. Throw in another Kobe Bryant-type game, and that was enough to seal the deal.

To a man the Celtics says that they were not on top of their game in Game 1, but no one seems to know why.

The players wouldn’t say that the Lakers are a better team; instead, the furthest they would go is to say that the Lakers were a better team on that day.

Boston coach Doc Rivers and President/General Manager Danny Ainge settled on the “It’s the NBA, and in the playoffs there are ebbs and flows” manta.

Someone – maybe TWO someones – have to step up for the Celtics to grab this one and make this a competitive series.

Paul Pierce finished Game 1 24 points, but at least half were when the game was gone.

The Lakers controlled Rajon Rondo and kept him out of the paint. And Garnett is still smarting from Gasol’s array of moves.

Oh, and by the way, Celtics, you just lost your top assistant coach to the Bulls.

Second bad set of referees for the Celtics. Don’t they have ANY pull in the NBA front office?

Mike Callahan is 43-33 for home teams ATS and 51-25 SU for home teams. Ken Mauer is 31-41 ATS (small break there) and 41-33 SU. And Monty McCutcheon is 42-35-1 and 52-26.

In Game 1 the Celtics were called for a ton of early touch fouls after the first-period tangle between Pierce and Ron Artest.

That made it impossible for Ray Allen to guard Kobe Bryant, and it was off to the races. Don’t see how Game 2 will be any different.

Lakers -6 is the play, although I do like the OVER (190).
