The Denver Nuggets enter Game 4 of the 2011 NBA Western Conference quarterfinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the brink of being swept for the second time in four seasons as they try to avoid an early exit at the Pepsi Center on Monday night.

Oklahoma City are just one game away from clinching its first series since moving from Seattle just three years ago, and have now beaten the Nuggets five times in the past month, including a 97-94 victory over Denver to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the first-round playoff series on Saturday.

All-Star Kevin Durant scored 26 points, and Russell Westbrook had 23 as the Thunder held on for the win in the final minute.

Not even the return of Arron Afflalo who finished with 13 points or bounce back performances from J.R. Smith (15 points) and Chris Andersen (13) could keep the Nuggets from inching closer to elimination.

Trailing by 10 points in the final 50 seconds, Smith hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 23 to pull the Nuggets to within a point, but missed the buzzer beater that could have sent the game into overtime.

Exactly what the Nuggets need—extra time. But they won’t get any as they try to do what no NBA team has ever done—return from a 3-0 deficit to win an NBA playoff series, or force a pivotal Game 7.

The Thunder defense has done a great job frustrating the Nuggets who continue to struggle to find a suitable replacement for Carmelo Anthony.

Denver has also hurt itself with poor execution and a permeable defense. However, the Nuggets were 30 for 45 from the free throw line on Saturday and they are shooting 68.7 percent from there in the series. One thing that has kept them in Games 1 and 3.

The second is Coach George Karl’s ability to draw on his experience when he coached the Seattle Supersonics in the 1996 NBA finals.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Thunder –After being down 3-0 in that series with the Chicago Bulls. Karl coached his Supersonics to a win in both Games 4 and 5 before falling in game six. Pride can be a great motivator at times, but I don’t think it’s enough for the Nuggets to avoid another loss and elimination to a better Oklahoma City Thunder.
