Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz are struggling. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who looked at a single preview to the 2014-15 NBA season, but despite a solid win against the Golden State Warriors, this squad has lost two of its last three — and more specifically: four of its last five.

The Jazz, despite beating one of the NBA’s best teams in the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 30, has fallen to the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers in consecutive nights. Not only that, but their anemic offense is hardly making up for their average defense.

On the year, Utah is scoring just 95.9 points on the year, which is only good enough for 25th in the league.

Defensively, this group is giving up 98.6 points per contest.

That number is good enough for 11th in the NBA, and while that’s better than the offensive production, it’s hardly a number worth boasting as this group builds toward relevance in 2014-15.

Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns are coming off a bad loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. They fell 108-87 Thursday night, which was the first time they’d lost to this group in three contests.

Entering the matchup with the Jazz, Phoenix is fourth in the NBA in points per game contest. This group is accumulating 106.6 points per game, compared to  just 104.9 points per game allowed — the 28th-best mark in the NBA.

Eric Bledsoe is the team’s leading scorer at 16.9 points per game, but he’s barely leading Goran Dragic, who is right there at 16.5 points per contest.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • Under is 6-2 in Suns last 8 games playing on 0 days rest.
  • Under is 6-0 in Suns last 6 overall.
  • Under is 4-1 in Suns last 5 Friday games.
  • Suns are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games as a favorite.
  • Suns are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
  • Under is 6-1 in Jazz last 7 games playing on 1 days rest.
  • Under is 15-7 in Jazz last 22 overall.
  • Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.
  • Jazz are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
  • Jazz are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games playing on 1 days rest.

4* NBA Prediction: Phoenix -5.5

Surprisingly, Phoenix has underdog status in this one — if you consider recent trends. However, the Suns are coming off a decent loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, and they’re looking for a bounceback win against one of the league’s worst teams if we’ve ever seen one.

Pick Phoenix ATS.
