The plus side for these two clubs right now is, one team must emerge with a notch in the win column.

The home team Nuggets – despite coming off a rare win over LeBron and the Cleveland Cavs – look ready for a scorched-earth rebuild strategy. The Nugs are guard Ty Lawson and not much else.

Oklahoma City, meanwhile, had the look of a Western Conference contender from the outset, until the injury bug attacked with fury. The Thunder have been hamstrung without their two best players, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Consequently, they’ve had to rely on defense-first Serge Ibaka and former role player Reggie Jackson to carry the mail. It doesn’t come as a surprise that OKC is off to a 3-9 start.

Denver has a 3-7 record, trying to put its best foot forward. It’s safe to say Denver-area sports fans should stake their hopes on the NFL’s Broncos and the NHL’s Avalanche.

With their full roster, the Thunder would be expected to come into the Pepsi Center and steamroll the Nuggets. The team is just trying to weather the storm. KD is recovering from foot surgery and Westbrook is bouncing back from a broken wrist.

Westbrook had his surgery at the beginning of November and the timetable was approximately four weeks, so he should be back in the fold in the next couple of weeks. The twin procedures really torpedoes Oklahoma City’s chances for this year, however – especially if the current slide continues unabated.

The misfit toys Denver gathered when it dealt superstar Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks really haven’t jelled in the Rockies. If Lawson isn’t scoring at will, Denver isn’t much of a threat. Big man JaVale McGee, in particular, has been disappointing.

The talk after Denver beat Cleveland was more the Cavaliers’ players and coaches preaching that they beat themselves. It’s not a ringing endorsement for a lower-tier Western Conference club in a league where it’s hard to succeed with a couple of studs.

The Thunder still at least rebound and play defense, thanks to the endless arms of Ibaka. Denver ranks 27th in the league in points surrendered, so maybe even OKC’s bench players can dump some points in the thin air.
