Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs’ current road trip has not been a successful one. The team is just 2-4 since hitting the road back on Feb. 8, and it enters its contest with Portland having lost three straight.

Unfortunately for San Antonio, things aren’t getting any easier. The Blazers have added backcourt depth with a trade-deadline acquisition of Arron Afflalo, and they’re getting LaMarcus Aldridge back after the All-Star missed one game with a thumb injury on Sunday.

For the Spurs to get back on track, they’ll need to execute on both sides of the ball. That sounds like a gimme, but the Blazers are a top-10 team on both ends of the floor.

Look for the Spurs to control the pace early, dictating the way the game is played late.

Trail Blazers

In his first game with the Blazers, Arron Afflalo hardly stood out. That’s for two reasons.

First and foremost, it was his debut with a brand new team half way through the season. Nobody should be expected to perform at their best in that situation, and Afflalo admitted so much when he said, “Obviously, I was a little passive.”

Secondly, you have to consider the competition. His first game with a new organization was against the NBA’s toughest defense: the Memphis Grizzlies.

Look for Afflalo to be more comfortable with the offense in his second outing.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • SA are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
  • Over is 10-3 in SA last 13 vs. NBA Northwest.
  • Under is 21-8-1 in POR last 30 home games.
  • POR are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
  • Over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
  • SA are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

4* NBA Prediction: Portland -3

Recent betting trends really don’t point one way or the other on this one. Both teams are struggling, and both could use a win to push for positioning with the playoffs nearing.

All that said, the Blazers have home-court advantage — not to mention a more comfortable Afflalo with Aldridge returning to the court.

If Portland were projected to win by much more than three, I’d be hesitant to pick them ATS. However, that’s not the case, as a three-point spread is what we’re working with at this juncture.
