New Orleans

You can’t look at the New Orleans Pelicans without first gawking at what Anthony Davis has done up to this point. Through eight games, the third-year big man is averaging 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 4.1 blocks per game. He’s leading the Hornets in all of the aforementioned categories, and he’s doing it while shooting and incredible 56.1 percent on 17.4 attempts per contest.

Davis aside, this team is looking like it’s entered another level after last season. Health has yet to be a significant issue, and it’s 5-3 through the early part of the year.

The problem here is that the Pelicans have yet to beat a legitimate contender aside from the struggling San Antonio Spurs. The team is 0-3 against the Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Against Portland, New Orleans will be tested. The Trail Blazers are 7-3, and have the luxury of playing another game at home.

The Pelicans are coming off a big-time win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, 139-91.

Portland

The Trail Blazers have done something this season that they’ve struggled with the last two years. They’ve managed to be productive on both ends of the floor.

Through the first 10 games, Portland has established itself as the seventh-best team in terms of points scored per game. Shockingly, the team is also seventh-best in terms of points allowed.

The Blazers have also played incredibly unselfishly. The team is sixth in terms of assists per contest, and it’s managed to collect at least 20 assists in every game thus far.

The catch here is going to be health. The Blazers have been without both starting forwards for the past few games (Nicolas Batum and LaMarcus Aldridge), and they’d like to see at least Aldridge return in this one with Anthony Davis on the other end.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • Over is 7-2 in NO last 9 vs. NBA Northwest.
  • NO are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 Mon. games.
  • POR are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Southwest.
  • Under is 6-2 in POR last 8 home games.
  • POR are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 Mon. games.
  • NO are 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

4* NBA Prediction: New Orleans +3

If the Blazers get at least Aldridge back for Monday’s game (he’s questionable as of Monday morning), look for Portland to win against the spread. The Blazers have been effective on both sides of the ball, and Aldridge has been one of the biggest reasons why.

If Aldridge is out, New Orleans becomes a legitimate threat to pull off the upset both ATS and straight up.

Keep an eye on Aldridge’s status leading up to the game, but at this point, consider New Orleans a good underdog pick.
